College House Technology Questions

I want to buy a printer that my son can use in the Quad wirelessly from his MacBook. It is my understanding that students can't use their own wireless routers. I think that would also prevent them from using 802.11.g/b wireless printers.

Will this solution work:
- use an ethernet-ready printer
- use an ethernet switch
- print to an IP address assigned to the printer

I also wonder how folks connect their XBox 360 machines to the internet.

Any tips/advice would be appreciated.

Is there a particular reason not to use a more typical USB connected printer?

you can not use a wireless printer or connect to the xbox 360 with Airpennnet.

I also dont think the solutions would work. The usb connection would work fine . Also penn is trying to get their printers wireless, so you can print from your room and go to the printing station to collect your print outs.

USB is less preferable because you would constantly be switching cables with a roommate sharing the device. It would also be nice to sit on your bed with a laptop if you want and print without cables running along the floor.

Speaking of college house print stations

 • are they plentiful (just down the hall, or just one per college house)?
 • do they offer both color and B&W?
 • are they well-mantained and reliable?
 • do most people use them?

Frankly, going with the whole ethernet switch thing is probably way too much of a hassle. Doable, but still…

Anyways, I don’t remember whether Xbox 360s could connect wirelessly, but I am positive that they will at least be able to get online via ethernet. Just ask the ITAs for help once the semester starts.

Printers are available in the computer lab. There is one in each college house and it may be extremely close or far away depending on where your room is. Both color as well as Black and White are available though color is crazy expensive iirc. Plenty of people use those and they generally are pretty well stocked up.

To be honest, it’s such a hassle to set up wireless networking for printers (and actually impossible over the AirPennNet network I believe) that it’s just easier to use a USB cable. It worked just fine for me freshman year. I had a printer; if my roommate needed it, he’d borrow it; the transfer would cost us each roughly five seconds… no big deal. Also, there is really no added benefit to printing from a bed compared to at a desk. You’re going to have to be next to the printer at some point to pick up the papers regardless of where you press the “print” button.

Save some hassle and just don’t worry about it. College Houses usually have a few printing stations (it depends on the House; high rises have several but Hill only has one). There is a per page charge for printing in all college houses. Hardly anybody uses them, I’d estimate. Most roommates just share a printer.

As for Xbox360, I have no clue. The most advanced video game I know is Nintendo 64, and even that is a little too advanced for my taste. More of a Sega Genesis kinda guy.

My hallmate was able to get my xbox360 online wirelessly. It can happen. You just need a computer savy person who can jump through AirPennNet’s hoops.
