College Info Books

Does anyone have any recommendations for books that talk about pros/cons of schools, including stuff like social life/dorms/etc.

i'm trying to research schools, but all the official websites make their school sound equally amazing to all the others, so i'm getting nowhere.

The only book I've heard of is College prowle*r but I don't want to buy individual books for all the schools I'm looking at.

Thanks.

There's a "Student's Guide to Top 100 Colleges" or something like that. I read over all the reviews for similar books on amazon and on here, and that's the one I ended up buying. Although it only has what it considers the top 100 colleges in it, it covers each of the schools very very well (3 student interviews covering just about anything you want to know) and seriously, only 2 colleges on my list aren't covered in the book. :)

Fiske Guide.

The Fiske guide is good as well as some book that's the Yale guide to colleges (I'm not sure of the exact name). Online, I used princetonreview.com, and review web sites that may not always be so accurate, but could still be helpful: **************.com, epinions.com, and campusdirt.com.

Fiske – good general commentary

Ruggs' Recommendations –*if you know majors you like, take a peek

College Prowl-r –*quality student-related and driven commentary

(Not in any particular order, but get all 3)

Yale Insider's Guide to Colleges is very good, as is the Fiske. Make sure any book you get is very current.

Get an online subscription - it allows you access to hundreds of schools.

What has worked well for my kids is a combination of one of the more "traditional" guides, such as either Princeton Review or Fiske, along with the more "student-to-student" oriented guides, such as The Insider's Guide, the P-rowler series, or the "Top 100 colleges" guide.

ooops I meant the Insider's.
Any traditional data can be obtained from the school's website or PR or Collegeboard online. :)

I second, third, etc. the Student's Guide to Colleges.
It's very useful and gives a whole new aspect to college information. Plus it's very funny--students seem to have good senses of humor at America's "top 100."

A more biased but equally unique and eye-opening book is "Cool Colleges" by Donald Asher. I have last year's edition and it seems to be about twice as thick as this years, so I'd check the library to see what they have.

Or maybe it's Student's guide... (It's the one with the yellow cover and black strips across it) I think it's Student's Guide. Sorry, I'm just out of it.

That's Student's Guide with the yellow cover, stripes, etc.
lol

this is too complicated! they should have more unique names
The Insider's Guide is the Yale Daily News one, which I almost bought. It seems like a middle ground between, say, Fiske and Student's Guide

ok, so i'll get fiske and one of the student ones.

thanks
