College Internet Access & Housing

Hi everyone :)

When choosing a housing, other than looking for the basic necessities ,i also look for decent internet access and speed to stay in contact with my family and friends abroad as well as research.

Which is better to choose, Internet Jacks or Wireless Access?

And is it better to live in a building full of Freshmans or Freshman&Seniors?

I don’t know about who is better to live with, but about the internet, it depends. Are you allowed to bring in your own router? If so, the internet jacks are the way to go, as you can put in your own router, which will be faster than using the college routers. The Internet jacks will be faster than wireless access, but it does 'tie" you to the desk/wherever your cord can reach.

Most unis have wifi in their dorms as well as Ethernet jacks. They usually encourage students to use the Ethernet jacks since they’re faster and take a load off of the wireless network. So either way you should be fine.

As for buildings, doesn’t really matter. At most schools seniors aren’t gonna be living in the same dorms as freshmen though.

Jacks are faster, but if there is no WiFi, you are tied to the jack and can’t use your laptop on your bed, in another room, or anywhere else in the dorm.
It’s better to live in a building full of freshmen.

Oooh, okay, thanks all! :)

My dorm didn’t have wireless. I had like a 20ft ethernet cable that hid behind my desk if I was seated there but allowed me to sit all over the room otherwise… it wasn’t quite as ridiculous as it sounds, but close. Got the job done, though!

Like everyone else said, Jacks are faster. In my college dorms they have both wireless and the Jacks in case students want to study in lounges or what not. As far as living with both seniors and freshmen… my school has dorms for only freshman and dorms for upperclassman with only like 3 for anyone. I would choose an all freshman dorm. That way it will be easier to make friends with everyone being more open to the new college experiences etc. In addition, even if you wanted to be with seniors it would be hard since by time your a junior almost everyone at my school lives off campus. Or at least in the university owned apartments.
