My son has a college interview coming up, and I was wondering what current standards are for interviews for men -- khakis, or are jeans and a nice button down shirt and or sweater ok? What would be considered too casual? What would be considered too dressed up?

The interview this time is going to be in a Starbuck's.

No jeans. Kahki’s, belt, no sneakers, button down collar shirt. Maybe navy blazer. Can probably get away without tie if wear blazer. I recommend over dressing, to appear professional, even in Starbucks.

Last year, my son had several interviews and wore dress pants, a button down shirt and nice shoes. No tie or jacket. He was always the nicest dressed in the room and he always felt good about that. I agree, over-dressing is always better than under-dressing.

No tie if meeting in a Starbucks. Khaki’s, button down shirt, and casual shoes are just fine. If you were meeting someone at their place of work or a club and the dress code there typically includes a suit or jacket, then I would dress up. It is getting less and less frequent for workplaces to use that attire. I’ve been interviewing for years and I can’t recall a time that I made a mental note of what someone was wearing so don’t worry about this.

If he is dressing more dressily than he is used to, make sure that the clothes fit and that he is comfortable wearing them. Poorly fitting dress clothes tend not to look very good, and make it obvious that this is not how the person usually dresses (so he is not “being himself” or anything close).
