Hi

Just a few quick questions about the interview process that I am too embarrassed to ask anyone in real life (haha)

1) What to wear- I am planning on wearing a light blue button up shirt and tan khackis - does this sound ok? Should I wear sneakers or dress shoes? I am doing a tour and info session BEFORE the interview, I would have the opportunity to go back to our car

2) Appearance- I'm growing a slight goatee, but it isn't fully in yet. Is it best to have a clean and shaved face for the interview rather than my 17 year old almost kinda goatee?

3) Leadership qualities- If asked about any leadership qualities, would it be appropriate to mention online positions I hold/have held? I have been a forum moderator on Miniclip.com for the past 4 years (requiring responsibility, sound judgment), I lead a clan/guild of 102 people on an online game. Are these appropriate to mention, or should I mention only real-life positions? I haven't mentioned either of these on my college application/essay

Thank you for any help :-)

Just my opinion....

Wear the sneakers for the tour and change into the dress shoes before the interview. Button down shirt and khakis should be fine. My son wore a tie on his interviews, but you also need to feel comfortable, so if the tie feels over the top for you or for the general culture of the campus, you should make that call.

I think the semi-goatee is not an issue.

That question is likely to get quite different answers. I'd say if you're being interviewed by anyone over 40 or thereabouts, I wouldn't mention it as "leadership experience" although I suppose it could come up when talking about outside interests, but I wouldn't create an impression that it's a major committment in your life. If you're being interviewed by a senior student or recent grad.... I don't know. Will be curious to hear others' thoughts on that.

The most important thing to have ready for the interview are some questions. I can guarantee you that during the interview they will turn to you and ask "do you have any questions I can answer?" This isn't idle chat or to fill time. Its to gauge how seriously you've thought about yourself as a student at that school.

If you haven't spent much time on it then it shows. You'll ask questions already covered in the viewbook or other material you should have looked at. And if you've really thought about attending X then you're bound to have some questions not answered in those materials about things that matter to you personally.
