College Interview....What to expect?

So I have my first college interview in a week, for Harvey Mudd. Can someone who has been to one before tell me what to expect? I have done my research, so I will be able to talk about why I want to go there etc, but beyond that I have know idea what to prepare for. What are these interviewers looking for? What will they ask? What sorts of questions should I ask them? Thanks, I’m super nervous so any advice is appreciated

Unless you know everything there is about going to Mudd, you might take this opportunity to ask them some questions about the school.

From what I remember (and could gather from my kids), most interviews were pretty relaxed. Typical questions were things like: What classes are you taking, which do you enjoy (or not enjoy). What do you look for in a college? What are your extra curriculars? And make sure you have a “why” answer (Why is that your favorite class? Why do you like that extra curricular? etc.) In other words don’t just say — “I like Physics.” but rather “I like Physics because…”

Good luck on your interview! Mudd is a great school!

D interviewed with Stanford, Harvard, Brown, U.Chicago, Princeton last year. An interview with Admissions is different than an Alumni interview. The most important thing to know is why Harvey Mudd is a good fit for you or why you think it might be. The interviews (even schools like the four above) are typically not like a job interview where there is a wrong answer and you are eliminated. The college simply wants to see whether in person you are as strong as you appear on paper. I’ve been on the other end of things interviewing for West Point as well. A strong interview can really strengthen your application but a bad interview rarely hurts you that much

I’d suggest you want to also do your homework about yourself. Make a brainstorm list of the 10 -15 things you have done that you are most proud of. This could be from making a team, to writing a killer history paper, to learning to surf, or running a marathon. Anything that you have worked at and are proud to have achieved. This list is where you start to now figure out what quality of your was instrumental in at least a few of these accomplishments? If you can find this quality, let’s make it a theme. IN other words, this is the phrase that best explains you.

Alright, I see that this post was back in September. Do you have more interviews coming up? If so, check out the website www.iscacademy.org. Go to the section on “Articles” Start with “Developing your personal story.” If you want to do a FREE practice interview with me, we can skype one. OK?

Best of luck however you decide,
