College interviews - Class of 2009

Did any class of 2009'ers have any college interviews yet? How did they go? Also......can you have an interview without the adcom opening your file, as in receiving at least part of your Common App?

Yeah, i was wondering about that, a got an e-mail from a school about summer interviews, what happens if you interview before you apply?

Yes, you can have an interview before you start applying. That usually happens when you visit colleges over the summer before senior year.

Most colleges don't want to interview anyone over the summer if they're not a rising senior (in other words, no juniors), but other than that -- you don't need to have already applied to schedule an interview. There are a lot of tips on this forum that you can search for that give you an idea of the type of questions asked, but essentially admission interviews are pretty low-key and are tailored to make you feel comfortable. It's just another way for them to get to know who you are and what you're interested in. It's also to give you information about the school. Always come prepared to ask a few questions that you can't find the answer to on the school's website. I guarantee that in every interview you will ever be in your entire life, the interviewer will ALWAYS ask if you have any questions. Don't say no -- be prepared with a few. And come in somewhat knowledgeable about the school. In other words, don't say you're thinking about majoring in business if the school doesn't have a business major.

How do you request an interview at a school if it's not required for admission?

Also, what are the admission benefits of an interview excepting showing the college that you're interested? If you really rock the interview do you get a letter of rec?

Thanks.

I had an interview at a safety school that I visited over spring break. I kind of did it just for experience, but I definately learned from it.

zain.dhanani, you can usually find out how to get an interview at a school by looking around on the school's website. For Carleton I e-mailed the admissions office, Reed sent me an invitation via e-mail, I requested mine on the Internet for the University of chicago, I had my Swarthmore interview when I visited.

The main benefit of having an interview is that you can find out more about the school and the school can find out more about you. The school probably won't find out a ton about you, since you'll express yourself in your essay and they'll know about your extracurriculars and all that, so it's not that big a deal. After you have an interview, the interviewer sends a brief message to the admissions office about you and the admissions deans read it. If you really rock the interview then the interviewer will write good things.

Thank dchow08 for the info :D
