College Interviews?!??!

I have a college interview in a couple days and I just suck at interviews because I get nervous. Will having a bad interview harm your chances of admission or will canceling one look worse?

Probably won’t matter unless (A) you can’t speak English, (B) you are a dirty scumbag, or © you smell of booze. Don’t cancel.

Rather than focus on your only two options, “bad interview” or cancelling, focus on this: make this a great interview. By finding ways to calm your nerves before your interview and reviewing questions they may ask, then you should do just fine on your interview. Interviews will always be a big part of your life whether it is for college admissions or finding a job. By knowing what you can say and demonstrating thoughtful responses, you’ll do well on interviews. Don’t focus on the negatives and do your best! Don’t cancel unless you have a legitimate reason to. Prepare!

Google tips for college interviews. Practice some ideas (not memorized speeches though!) for the most common questions. Try to be friendly and focus on presenting yourself in a positive light.
A “bad” interview won’t wreck your chances at admission, unless you do something awful or bring up a red flag in your app.

… like trying to excuse your GPA because you found your classes boring and useless which caused you to not turn in your homework – because you were way ahead of what they were trying to teach you.

Not kidding. That’ll come off looking REAL bad.

Good luck.

Don’t be scared to ask for a bit of time to think over questions! Have some anecdotes to share at your disposal. Also, just remember that it’s most likely a very casual meeting. Nerves really got the best of me when I had my only interview, but everything worked out in the end!

My kids found most of the interviews to be a casual conversation.

Don’t cancel. Nobody expects a 17 year old to be a smooth interviewer. Go with the idea of learning more about the school and you should be fine. Prepare yourself for success. Google “college interview questions” to get a sense of what types of things get asked. Think of a couple of questions you have that are specific to the school in advance. Bring your resume if you have one, or perhaps create a list of your academic achievements and major ECs to use as a springboard for conversation.

Just be chill. Talk about your interests. If you are a baller, talk about sports, if you are a rapper, talk about music. Watch interviews online to get an idea. Also remember who is the interviewerm if he/she is old try to connect. If they are young try to connect. Written on cell, sorry for an errors!
