I have a couple questions about college interviews, particularly about interviews at University of Chicago. First, do your parents come into the room with you, or do you go alone? Second, how dressed up should one get? Thanks to anyone that replies to this post.

You go alone, don't dress up, come informal.

why do you dress informally? so it doesn't seem as if you are putting on a facade? doesn't dressing casually reflect a lack of effort, and by extension, a lack of interest.

Well my interviewer told me that it was informal and to wear jeans because she was wearing them too

I wore a sweater and khakis.

but would it be bad if I did sort of dress up?

not necessarily, but I wouldn't wear a suit or something that is over the top.....i would say don't overdress the admissions couselors themselves, that is your limit

what do parents do while students are being interviewed? do they have a special place where they can stay?

I'm a parent. My son interviewed on campus a few weeks ago. He wore a collared shirt, casual type, but tucked in to slacks. No tie. Clean tennis shoes. Believe me, for him that was very dressed up. I walked around, visited a library, found a coffee shop. We just guessed on the clothes, but I think I can say with confidence that you should not take a parent into the interview with you. Definitely.

Umm my mom just sat and read stuff in the admissions office. It's not like it takes a long time, maybe 1/2 an hour max I'd say.

Thank you so much everyone for the replies.
