I am transferring to Rutgers University from another 4 year college. I made all As and Bs except for one class which I failed. I got a letter from them saying they werent happy with my second semester grades and to explain myself. I wrote them a nice letter one week ago, and the director of admissions immediately replied "we forward this to the the deans committee and they will let you know the results as soon as they are available"

My question is, would it be taking a chance to ask her when i may expect to hear the outcome? It's already been a week and its already late july...otherwise i wouldnt be so pushy...but i need to know. Should i follow up or wait???

Would you be able to stay at your current school if they did rescind you?

i went to school in north carolina and im living here for the summer. my rents up aug 1 and i was planning on going home >:( i sent the email and i got an automated response saying gone til the 26th…so ill just have to wait til then

Aw, I met a girl at the STAR day from one of the Carolinas who was staying there for the summer…

Anyway, definitely follow up and call. It can’t hurt and can only help your case. Possibly offer to retake the class at RU to “prove yourself”

What exactly did you write in your letter? Did you explain the circumstances that led to the failing grade?

Definitely stay on top of things…a lot can get lost in the shuffle of admissions offices, especially with the new incoming class.

lauren i think that may have been me! haha

the letter was well written and sent out right away…briefly explained what happened with that class then went on to talk about the accomplishments, not the failures of last semester and that id be willing to retake the class. i have a 3.0 (would be a 3.35 if not for math) and 62 credits…im not too worried but if they rescind me over one class im going to flip!

I hope you were more than brief about the failed class since that’s the real point of concern. A good explanation, whether a person discussing a bad grade or a corporation discussing a bad product, has 3 key areas. It accepts responsibility, expresses regret, and explains why it won’t happen again.

I understand why it might feel better to focus on the positive and accomplishments, but you need to convince the deans that you understand what happened in the class that you failed and why you’ll be able to avoid the same issues/mistakes in the future.

If you were wearing a cute, pink dress then we ate lunch together, haha

The only thing I can think of doing at this point would be to find out of the dean has a direct fax line or his office has one and possibly resend the letter you wrote and give any additional information you have on the cover letter.

Good luck!!

Just call and let them know your housing situation. They are human and will understand the need for a decision asap.

Is it too late for you to retake the failed class at a CC? (Why didn’t you sign up to retake that class this summer?)

yes its too late…i didnt think there would be any problems if i already attended orientation and registered for classes.

lauren, that was me! :D

mike that worries me…the letters already sent…im confident about it, but you definitely have a valid point so im a little anxious…what do you think? i feel like ill receive a decision when she comes back from her vacation…

What follows is my advice; I’m not a counselor or anything, so take it as a personal opinion. If I was you and thought my 1st letter attempted to gloss over the problem and paint a happy face on things, I’d write a 2nd letter. You can start off by simply saying you had been thinking over your 1st letter and decided it may not have sufficiently addressed your difficulties. Then go on to accept responsibility (eg. no blame any factor other than your choices of how you spent your time, the help you sought, etc) and to describe what you’ve learned from the experience.

Given the time urgency, you might want to email or fax it in.

Talk it over with your parents and HS counselor (if they’re available this summer) before you act.

Best of luck to you!

they decided to let me stay! yippie the best part is i dont even have to retake the class or start off on probation. dodged a bullet there!!
