College Letters/Emails

i was just wondering if letters/emails from colleges mean anything. all of them seem to just be general info about the college and that you are impressively academically etc. But do they help you at all with admissions?

No. Everyone (seriously, everyone) receives an inordinate amount of college mail.

Even from like top colleges i.e. U of Chicago, Harvard, Cal Tech, MIT etc?

Sorry to burst your bubble, but nope. It’s just advertising. Everybody gets them, even from good colleges. =p

Columbia sent me an INSANE amount of stuff. I have a 0% chance of getting into Columbia.

Also, the ‘chancellor’s choice’ application stuff (ones that are ‘no essay’ or 'two week decision) are really just to get more applicants so that they can brag about how many applicants they attract.

omg so did I. I got a letter from columbia and I was all ''OH MY GOSH! COLUMBIA!"

I got an application to harvard last year, and so did some of my friends, nobody would have gotten in. I got something from pretty much every Ivy and top school. Means nothing, except for boosting your confidence a bit.

Now if you get a handwritten, personalized note from the dean, that would be different.

Doesn’t mean a thing. They’re trying to boost applications so they can lower their acceptance rates.

That said, I did do one of the special snowflake no-essay applications to a safety, and I still got in. So if you’re absolutely certain about whether you’ll be accepted to x safety school, it can save some time.

It’s really nice at first, it makes you feel special that so many people want you.

But then it just gets annoying. I threw out a trash bag full of crap schools sent me earlier today. I feel sorry for the forests of the world.

Today I got something in the mail from Rensselaer Poly saying I have earned “Candidate’s Choice status”… without even explaining what it is, lol.

But yeah, college mail is just to encourage more people to apply so that they can get more money from Applications and lower acceptance rates.

Yeah they send you stuff based off the surveys you have to fill out before the PSAT or the ACT. If you said you’re interested in private colleges, you get sent tons of stuff from those colleges. On the last ACT, I changed it to public universities so now I don’t get letters from colleges with only 1,000 people :P

When I was in high school, Georgetown sent me a big packet in the mail with a catalog and even an application.

I laughed. and then proceeded to throw it in the trash. I had zero chance of getting in there.
