My son is considering taking a course at Tufts and/or BU in IR during the first summer session (May-June). Since he would be a visiting student, who does not already have friends in Boston, he is wondering whether there is much of a college life (activities, clubs or other ways for him to meet people) during the summer. Any info would be appreciated.
Info about summer housing at Tufts would also be of help.

I’m guessing that there isn’t very much. It’s not like a pre-college type program where there’d be a lot of other students in his position and I think that while there still are a pretty good amount of people (albeit a fairly small percentage of the entire population) studying/working on campus, many of them probably live off campus and find other stuff to do. I don’t think there are many (any?) school sponsored activities over the summer and most clubs are probably on hiatus.

It’s true, there really aren’t good ways to meet people over the summer besides classes.

However, there are a lot of students here over the summer. I’ve stayed at Tufts every summer since I’ve been here and I’ve always been fully entertained.

If your son gets super bored, my friends and I will be here over the summer so we’d meet him. I’m a poli sci major, so I’ve probably taken whatever IR class he’s considering.

As far as housing, just go to the Tufts Summer School website, they offer the dorms out over the summer, with meal plans. If your son wanted to sublet an apartment, it would probably run him about $600/month + utilities, which might end up being a better deal and would also afford him a chance to meet people. There are always people looking for subletters. A few of my very good friends are still looking for subletters, and they have a very nice house one block away from campus.

Apartment listings (mostly summer sublets)

Thank you all for the helpful info, and Snarf thanks for the offer, I will relay it.

S1 is a sophomore. He and his roomates start paying for their off-campus house as soon as the school year ends, so a few of them will be spending the summer up there. He has to take care of a few things, so won’t be able to head back up there til early July. Do you know if Tufts does any sort of rolling hiring for the summer? He said something about the phone bank. The obvious answer is that he should call them-- just don’t know if he’s gotten on the ball about that yet. Otherwise will have to look for work in Boston, Medford, etc.

Yup, phone bank is a good idea. They pay relatively well but I don’t know how many hours he could get.

I’d take a look at the [Conference Bureau](<a href=“Tufts University”>Tufts University) as well.

Thanks, Snarf

Unfortunately all the positions in the Conference Bureau have already been filled by late April. You can try looking into working at the library or at Student Services.
Thanks. I know he’s going to be helping out with freshman orientation at the end of the summer, but is also looking for something when he gets back to campus in mid-July – sort of a late start.

He could always canvass. They’ll hire anybody.

I have one edit for my previous post-- Conference Bureau is in fact still looking for Conference Facilitators…However, the schedule for facilitators is pretty erratic (some days you’ll work from 4-12am, others from 12am-8am, etc) so this is only for people who are looking for a job in general and is NOT enrolled in summer classes.

Is canvassing the same as the phone bank?
He’d better get on the ball as soon as he’s done with finals…!

Don’t think he minds erratic hours - he’s probably up til 3 a.m. half the time anyhow… Sounds like there are better job prospects on campus than in our town. Slim pickings for students this year.

I meant canvassing like door-to-door or on street corners, with one of the groups like EnvironmentMassachusetts, MassPIRG, Greenpeace, something like that. They’ll literally hire anyone. If your son has the moxie to continually invade people’s privacy and ask for money, you can actually earn quite a bit in a summer. Ending up with about $10/hr isn’t uncommon. When I canvassed two summers ago I was earning about $18/hr. Rich people love giving their money away if it makes them less guilty about being rich.

'course, if he doesn’t have the moxie, he’ll probably get fired within two weeks. That’s why they hire everyone: they just see if you can do the job and then fire you if you can’t.

Tell me about it. No one wanted to hire me in Rhode Island despite my job experiences, probably because our state’s economy is just so abysmal nowadays…thank god for Conference Bureau haha.
