College List Additions/Suggestions

I'm looking for help with my current college list. So far I know the in-state colleges I will be applying to but OOS colleges not so much.

Quick Profile: White, male, rising senior, going to a good public school in Michigan.

GPA: 3.5 UW, 4.0 W

ACT: 33 composite

Course load: Very rigorous, 10+ IB classes by graduation. Mostly honors.

ECs: Sub-par, looking to join many clubs this year. Lots of sports though.

Criteria: I'm open to lots of different colleges. However, I want them to not be too small (4000+), preferably non-rural, and have a good business school. Also, nothing out west unless it's a really good fit. Also, I can probably pay in the 30k range after scholarships (possibly low-40k).

My current college list is as follows (from match to safety):

UVA
Michigan
Alabama (free tuition)
MSU
Michigan Tech (in case I have an engineering change of heart)

I need some more colleges to add to my list, preferably OOS and in the high match/reach range. Any input would be highly appreciated.

Maybe look at Ohio State if you want to step across that line…

Also, joining a bunch of clubs as a senior won’t help you. Only do it if you really want to be involved with them.

If you have lots of sports, then you already have all the ECs you need. Like Erin’s Dad says, joining a bunch of random clubs is just resume padding and looks lame. Don’t bother.

And add UMD to your list. The Smith School of Business is excellent and you are a metro ride away from DC internships. Check out the honors programs.

Second the opinion of UMD honors program. You have the stats to get consideration and there may be merit aid available.

The Kelly School of Business at Indiana U - Bloomington is highly ranked, and Notre Dame (if you can get the $ you need) could be a possibility.

OSU
Boston College
Lehigh
Case Western
Miami of Ohio
University of Indiana
USC

(not sure about aid)

Agree with IU Bloomington – IU looks at higher of unweighted or weighted gpa in determining merit aid, even for out of state applicants. With a 4.0 weighted and 33 ACT, you could qualify for automatic merit money as an out of state student. Students with high enough stats can be direct admits to the Business School – check the IU Bloomington admissions site for requirements for direct admits to business school.

With rolling admission, and an easy application (no essays or recs required - and unless a student is on the edge of getting accepted, you really do not need to submit them), you could be into IU by end of September. The automatic scholarship money is exactly that – automatic-- no separate application so, if you meet the posted stats, you know how much merit money you will get. Spend some time on the IU Bloomington website. Great college town, school spirit etc.

On UVA, be careful of calling it a match – you may fit the stats, but for out of state students, plenty of folks are rejected. As instate at Michigan, you should be in good shape for Ann Arbor, though I am not familiar with in state admission so you should listen to your guidance office, Naviance if your school uses it, etc.
