College list done?

3.67 gpa
1310 sat

Hamilton OR Colgate
Carleton OR Macalester
American University
Lewis and Clark
Occidental
Sarah Lawrence
Skidmore
Hobart and William Smith
Denison
Dickinson
Gettysburg

is this a well rounded list?

I suggest adding some in-state public universities.

the only problem with that is that I do not want a big school

Which ones are your safeties?

sarah lawrence, gettysburg, lewis and clark? and hobart and william smith are the ones Im likely to get into

targets are american, denison, dickinson, and oxy
reaches are probs skidmore? carleton or macalester, hamiltonnor colgate

Are these financial safeties as well?

yup as far as I know they’re pretty good with financial aid and luckily i wont be needing much if any

I’m sorry but I think you my not be judging your safeties and targets correctly.

I 'm not as familiar with the others but Gettysburg does not seem like a safety for you. I think their average SAT score is higher than 1310.

And I think Dickinson is more of a low reach since you are below average there, too.

In choosing a target, I think above average.

For safety, I think above the 75th percentile in a school with a generous admission rate.

  1. Make sure the other schools on your list are truly targets and safeties, because I'm not sure you have solid safeties. You should probably choose a couple more where you are above the 75th percentile and the admission rate is at lease 50%.
  2. Make sure your parents can really afford $250,000 for you college. The idea that a school is good for financial aid can be really deceptive.

True. And make sure that your parents will pay that much for a safety. We often see posts where parents have said that they’ll pay top dollar for a reach school, but they have no intention of paying that much for a match or safety.

Since you don’t want a big school, identify a couple of smaller schools to apply to where you’d get some merit, you’d get accepted, and you like the school.

Take a look at Elizabethtown and Susquehanna if you like smaller colleges in Pennsylvania.

A 3.67 GPA and a 1310 SAT makes Carleton, Colgate, Hamilton very very unlikely unless you are hooked applicant and then they are unlikely - Macalaster is a touch easier to get into, but not enough to make it more than a very unlikely as well.

“sarah lawrence, gettysburg, lewis and clark? and hobart and william smith are the ones Im likely to get into”

I only looked at the first two on this list. For both either your SAT or your GPA according to prepscholar is close but at least very slightly below average. For a safety your GPA and SAT should both be at least close to the 75th percentile.

Also, you should run the NPC on each of these schools and show the results to your parents.

You don’t have any safety until you find at least one and preferably two schools where your GPA and SAT are at or above the 75th percentile of incoming students and you have run the NPC and your parents have said “okay” to the results.

I don’t know your families financial situation but full pay at most of these schools would be painful even for many families that are quite well off.

High Reaches:
Carleton
Hamilton
Macalester
Colgate

Low Reaches:
Gettysburg
Dickinson

High Matches/High Targets:
Occidental
American
Skidmore
Lewis and Clark
Denison
Sarah Lawrence

Low Matches/Low Targets:
Hobart and William Smith

I separated your reaches and matches into high and low to give you an idea of exactly how competitive you are for each school. Sarah Lawrence, Gettysburg & Lewis and Clark are definitely not safeties. Your most likely school seems to be Hobart and William Smith but that is still not a safety. Susquehanna and Elizabethtown as mentioned by MACmiracle would be great options. As a starting place for safeties I would generally look at schools with at least a 70% acceptance rate or higher. Good luck.

What does your guidance counselor say?
Are your parents okay with being full pay or do they expect merit scholarships?
If you don’t get into a college, are they okay with your taking a PG year?
The fact your GPA is from a prep school will make it count as higher, but the SAT will be seen as low for all but L&C, HWS, and SLC.
You can apply test optional at American and Denison, and they’d become matches.
Are all of these affordable at net cost, as indicated by NPC?
