Agree. He (and we) are very fortunate to have fantastic in state alternatives. Definitely needs options and safeties but when all the chips fall as they may, UW may be very difficult to turn down!
not us … our NYS flagships are kind of average and that’s with all the taxes that we pay …
We were in a similar situation. Our flagship is Michigan. They did well enough that we were confident that they would get into Michigan (in state). We do not qualify for FA. We told the kids that there would be very few schools that we would pay for other than Michigan. It made their college search a lot easier.
Northeastern. My nephew is graduating this year with a CS degree and he has multiple 6-figure job offers from companies everyone knows.
fwiw we LOVE Michigan and GaTech … we’ll likely apply to Michigan … as they are more open to OOS applicants … GaTech less so …
Yes, Michigan is right at 50% for OOS. It is a big source of revenue. Michigan gets very few $$ from the state (less then 10% of the budget).
My GT son loved Michigan. He actually did an engineering program there during the summer (you had to apply and write essays and send in test scores) which was amazing. They let you rotate thru all different kinds of engineering. He did one the same summer at NC State where you had to choose a field.
They told him at Michigan that the kids who go to the summer camp have a very high acceptance rate and he got in EA. They also give a scholarship to one participant each summer. He kept in touch with some of the kids he met during the summer in a chat group and the girl who got the scholarship (he said she was amazingly smart) ended up at MIT Worthwhile if you have the inclination for sure!
Edited to add - I don’t see the program listed anymore likely due to Covid. It was through the office of Diversity and Inclusion and people came from all over the country. It was a selective application and was only 500.00 to attend - I think it was 2 weeks long?
diversity and inclusion won’t be inclusive of our DS
Don’t count out GT. OOS is very difficult but they also have a very holistic application. My senior son was deferred but despite great stats is weak on ECs. After 3 years of hearing me say, you need to do something other than play sports he believes it If your child can put forth a compelling application they will certainly consider it holistically!
Was not of our son either. My son said diversity meant he was from Georgia That was not a determining factor for sure.
doubtful … boys are boys … computer games, youtube, anime …
bright but unmotivated seems to be the way these kids of privilege are …
My son’s free time is playing golf and fishing They really want you to demonstrate how you will add to the GT community/mission statement and that was really tough!
but he was still in-state … much better chances
I’m surprised no one has mentioned the University of Waterloo. Tops for CS hires into Google. It’s in a suburb of Toronto. https://www.businesschief.com/leadership-and-strategy/university-waterloo-googles-top-choice-recruitment
Also check out the schools which are known for graduate programs in your intended area of interest: Best Master's In Computational Linguistics These are all going to be reach, but if you really know what you want to do, you might get lucky with your strong stats.
We did a deep dive on Waterloo.
Great school, but huge … and US Schools just give you so much more in terms of
resources and flexibility.
We have the same interests! I’m also looking to go into Computational Linguistics/EE, so I’ll share a couple from my list.
Stanford (Symbolic Systems)
UCLA (CS + Linguistics)
Duke University (CS + Linguistics)
Northeastern University (CS + Linguistics)
Cal Poly (San Luis Obispo) (CS)
UCSD (CSE)* (also check out their CogSci specializations)
Brown University (CS - I’m pretty sure you can concentrate in CompLin)
Not on my list, but others that you should consider:
Boston University (CS + Linguistics)
UIUC (CS + Linguistics)
Thank you , I checked Rose-Hulman and I like it.
I am not interested in MIT or Ivys - I am not that smart. I am happy with state schools
Yes, I am interested in Michigan. I will apply. I was born in suburb of Detroit and studied there till my sixth grade. So I have strong affinity with Michigan
Thank you @camilayang for the list. Appreciate your sharing
Might as well add Purdue and UWisc-Madison to the list …
