What ARE the good deals?
Freshman | Office of Admissions says that “The UW does not participate in early decision or early action admission.”
https://admit.washington.edu/apply/admission-to-majors/ specifically mentions some information about computer science admission.
To me, schools like Purdue, Utah, and some of the others mentioned would be more affordable vs. UCs and also offer high quality CS.
RD to UW and EA to other matches then (for OP)
2020 Data | Applications to UW Listing Computer Science as their first choice major | Offered Admission directly to Computer Science |
---|---|---|
WA Residents | 1247 | 393 |
Domestic Non-Residents | 2893 | 68 |
International Students | 1114 | 29 |
Total | 5254 | 490 |
OP has a decent shot at UW given the in-state stats …
But boy do the OOS stats suck
Agreed on Purdue … Utah used to be REALLY good in CS … but it’s fallen off … plus … it’s in … Utah
I would do EA everywhere unless your senior grades will make a difference or you need a better test score. Gives you two bites at the apple if you are deferred.
You might want to consider adding UT Austin to your list. Specifically the Turing program there which would allow you to take advantage of small advanced CS classes through the beginning series and then open up all the research opportunities in Linguistics that a large top CS program would offer. There are some paths to merit aid (Texas Exes and the Turing program) along with paths to in state tuition after the first year.
UT Austin is mandated to accept 90% in-state … competing for the remaining 10% of spots isn’t overly productive.
For straight cs I would agree. Chances of admittance to ut and not uw is not worth effort. But the turing scholar applicants aren’t quite as disadvantaged oos, and the application reviewers are within the cs department. The OP would have more words to explain the ec’s and accomplishments in a turing application vs uiuc for example.
Thanks Everyone for your time , I really appreciate.
So below is my consolidated list. I will be applying only EA and RDs in 2021/2022.
- UW-Seattle -RD
- UCB,UCLA -RD
3.U.Mich -EA - G.Tech -EA & UNC -EA
- Purdue -EA
- Washington State -RD
- Oregon state-RD (yes, it’s cheaper under WUE option-almost like instate tution)
Curious how you determined which to apply RD? It is a manageable number to apply EA if you get started on your essays over the summer.
It is also a good idea to sometimes apply to your favorites first as application burn out is real!
Thanks @VirginiaBelle . I chose RD to some of the schools because they don’t offer EA or ED (ex: UW, WSU, UCB etc). You have a valid point. To avoid burnout, I will try to apply UW first then I will apply to my EA schools. I want to have atleast one admit in one school before RD so that I will have atleast something if I don’t get UW or UCB/UCLA in RD.
WSU is rolling admissions, you will hear within 3-4 weeks from applying if you apply by November
Thank you. Will do
Why the negative comment on the trend of Utah CS dept? They are hiring new faculty aggressively, plus SLC is an increasingly diverse city, LGBTQ friendly, etc?
One of my son’s friends is going to Utah. He and one of his buddies have already made plans to visit during ski season!!
