Okay. You see where I was going.
Fortunately they have great financial aid.
Yup. Glad to not be from an over-represented county in the state for college admission purposes. And traffic purposes. Haha.
She knows Yale is in New Haven, right? I’m guessing she’ll forget about the cold if she gets in
We are in hat donut hole of living in a very high COL so income may look high elsewhere but have less bang for a buck here (we have 3 currently in college and now get a tiny bit for 1, had several years with 2 in college and didn’t even get much in subsidized loans). With 5 altogether, it’s a lot.
Same thing I told her. Her responses, was “it’s an Ivy, Mom.” Lol.
I think the list good. She definitely has a boost with her sibling being at Duke. It seems like they like to keep families together, with all the siblings on campus.
Good Luck to her!
Other than it is her 1st choice, that is the main reason she is applying ED there. That will be when her legacy status gives her any boost at all. We’re fortunate enough to understand how their financial aid works, so that helps too.
If Duke is ED why visit schools? If she gets in it’s game over.
I would look out for Miami. She might really like what she sees. Miami, beaches, flexible curriculum, sports and top notch marine biology.
Our friend’s daughter just graduated from Miami. Loved it. Work hard, play hard girl. It was our S20’s favorite but not enough merit.
We want to be prepared and not scrambling to visit schools in the Spring if she does not get in ED or is deferred. We hope it is game over though. If nothing else, our tour of Florida will include riding down to the Keys and spending a few days there as well. She likes what she can see of Miami from afar, however, it’s not enough to move it ahead of Duke. Their marine bio program is what put it on her radar in the first place. Of course, I am currently 0/2 when it comes to my kids going to school for something and actually graduating with that degree.
Lol. Can I ask what his stats were and how much merit they offered him? The NPC gave us a range for her stats, and I am wondering if she will be on the high end or the low end.
His stats were very similar with a higher weighted GPA. He got $15k/year. He ended up at Georgia Tech but really wanted Miami. I liked it more after visiting and looking at the curriculum. Your D might have second thoughts about ED after visiting.
S21 ended-up at FSU with OOS waiver and honors. He’s having a good time so far. Your D should qualify for both as long as there’s no “C” on her transcript.
Good luck.
Thanks! No C’s for her, so that’s a plus. She gets aggravated when she compares her GPA’s to both of her older sisters because NC and her school changed the weight for Honor’s and AP classes after they graduated. They were getting 1.0 for honors and 2.0 for AP courses, while she only gets .5 and 1.0. We did discuss that about Miami since the trip will be after the ED app to Duke and she still said Duke will be #1. The guidance counselor grilled her too. From what I have seen about FSU, I think she will really like it there too.
USC would also be a nice option. Top notch business school and they also have a good marine bio program. I did my masters there years ago. Nice place to spend four years.
That only matters if the colleges she will apply to take weighted GPAs at face value, instead of recalculating with their own weighting. Is that true for any of the colleges she will apply to?
Guidance counselor might’ve been on to something. Can you cancel ED anytime before decision day?
Update us after visits.
I know that UofSC and the Florida schools will all recalculate. Her sister that is currently at Duke ended up with around a 5.3 when all was said and done after graduation (thanks to PLTW and around the same number of AP’s), however if it was recalculated to how they are done today, it would be pretty close to hers.
I would think colleges recalculate, I think the highest GPA at our school is a 4.4 (honors and AP’s are weighted the same).
Pre-law can be done with any major. She may want to read Choosing Your Major for Prelaw | Law School Numbers and Making Undergraduate Courses Count for Law School | Law School Numbers .
Does she have an idea of which majors are likely, possible, and unlikely?
At some colleges, some majors are filled to capacity, and they have varying ways of managing that (e.g. frosh have to apply to the major or division, and/or there is a secondary admission process to get into that major or division after enrolling). If that is true for the likely or possible majors at a given college, that can affect the application strategy for that college and/or the reach/match/likely/safety assessment of that college.
The only ones that she has expressed interest in are marine bio/sciences or linguistics. Two completely unrelated majors, for sure. I have a feeling if she doesn’t stick with Marine bio she will end up with some sort of humanities major.
Is Davidson too small?
