My daughter is part of the equestrian team at Colgate and loves it.
She would get excellent merit aid at Miami of Ohio and they have a very good equestrian program. You can get involved with the equestrian program at any level from competitive riding on down to just taking a introductory class. They have very good pre-med placement and many pre-meds pick up a zoology major because of the strength of the zoology program. If you have any sort of AP credit or dual enrollment credit it is pretty easy to double or even triple major. I do not know if they have a philosophy major though. They do have a pretty comprehensive set of general education requirements that requires philosophy and my daughter did like the philosophy classes she took. And while the basic med school classes aren’t easy I also would not call them GPA killers. There are lots of opportunities for smart motivated kids. My daughter is a junior triple majoring in biochemistry, neuroscience, and psychology and was doing lab research from her first semester. This summer she got a paid grant to work on her own project that she is going to present at a conference in Chicago in November.
Miami U, mentioned above, has a beautiful, traditional campus, by the way, with lots of green space and a wooded area, even if it’s not set in mountains or near water. I think it has a politically moderate/mainstream campus but I imagine she’d find plenty of left-leaning company. Disclaimer: I graduated from Miami U eons ago.
Another suggestion if she’s open to a LAC that’s just about the size of her high school (or maybe a dab smaller). She should get merit aid at Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA, and she’d get points for geographic diversity. Dickinson is known for strong study abroad. It has a beautiful, newish science building, a friendly progressive vibe (on the moderate rather than activist end of progressive though) and an equestrian team. Not a huge campus footprint but there are lots of trees and a pretty campus on the edge of a cute downtown…not quite Chapel Hill but there ARE some of the same kinds of little shops/mom and pop eateries, a few international restaurants and a farmer’s market. Some people don’t like a street that bisects campus, but (now that I think about it), that street is lined with trees and a stone wall that is a tiny bit Chapel Hill-esque. I think Dickinson would hit an academic sweet spot for preparing for med school as it is known for solid academics but is not a weed-out school. It has a reputation for professors who actively reach out to get to know students. Class sizes are small, so she’d get as much attention as she wants. I don’t know about opportunities to shadow or volunteer in hospitals, but the town of Carlisle is kind of within the outer exurb area of Harrisburg PA, so those possibilities may exist. Might be worth checking out.
@WAmom22and25, now you’ve inspired me to brainstorm. Hope you come back to this thread!
Skidmore college in Saratoga Springs has 2500 students (would she accept that?) and is located in a horsey town. The school mascot is a racehorse (appropriately) and there is an equestrian team. It has a woodsy campus about a mile from town. Definitely left-leaning students body. Saratoga Springs, historic resort for wealthy 19th century industrialists is as pretty and vibrant a small town as you will find, though probably more tourists are in it at any given time than students, though I imagine students make use of it too. You’d have to research merit aid there. Skidmore does look closely for demonstrated interest in choosing students, so if she likes it, she should make sure the school knows it!
