College List

I need to apply NOW but I have no idea what I want to do so I'm panicing. Consequently, since I do not know what I want to major in, almost all schools are open to me. I have made a list of schools consisting of schools in the NE and good in aid. There are other schools I am considering but I do not know if they are my impossible reaches, matches, or safeties. Can you guys help me out and tell me if it is realistic to even consider these schools? Dartmouth, Uni Chicago, Duke, Brown, Emory, Georgetown, Tufts, Emory, Wake Forest, Amherst, Williams, Swarthmore,Bowdoin,Middlebury. (I'm guessing these are my reaches with some impossibles) Im thinking Cornell ED.

General Info:
School is an okay public school. I am not sure what my rank is but I was in the top 10 percent and my GPA rose so I'm guessing I moved up even more. I did well all three years. I am Korean

SATII : 740 US History 700 BIO RE (I took US History a second time but i got a 690-_-) I may take another subject test
AP Tests: 4s on US and World History

I think those schools are reaches but not impossible. What do you like about Cornell that sets it apart from the rest?

You’ll get more responses if you provide some info on what you want in a school. Any programs you might possibly be considering? Do you want a large school or small? Urban or rural? Do you want a sports scene? Greek life? Do you need merit aid?

What is your UW GPA out of?

Sorry thats weighted GPA. And about Cornell, I’m not completely sure if I will ED, but the reason I’m thinking about it is 1)Obviously its a good academic school 2)As far as I know, there are liberal studies in addition to specific areas of study 3)Out of the Ivies, its fairly large. THere are pros and cons to this. Pros is that there is more diversity and a “bigger world” Con is that I also like close knit communities as well 4) I might consider going into accounting. I read somewhere Cornell is a good school for accounting but I cant find it on the site 5)I’m hoping to receive aid (although i may not be good enough) 5)I am undecided and if i went to Cornell I would most likely choose college of arts and sciences because it was the majors im thinking about (besides accounting) 6) Very well known school

Overall, I am not sure of why cornell yet. Many obstacles are in my way. First, my undecided major. Second, I need money and lots.

sigh…only if i knew what i wanted to become when i grew up

Please give draw the lines for what schools are my safeties, matches, reaches.

I’m pretty sure that all of the schools you mentioned are reaches.

I don’t think Wake Forest would be a reach with 1400. (if I’m reading it right that’s the combined best math plus verbal). Most of the others are definitely possible, but reaches. If you like Williams Amherst and Middlebury maybe add Colby or Hamilton which would be slightly easier to get into. I think I always hear that Grinnell has good aid. If accounting is a possible focus, though, you might want to look at a few places that have undergraduate business programs and are possible to get into for you like Boston College. Maybe apply early action to Chicago because it’s non-binding and would let you drop eliminate all but the top places from your list if you get in. Take a look at their essay questions ASAP if you are a senior (which it sounds like you are).

Dartmouth- reach
University of Chicago- reach
Duke- reach
Brown- reach
Georgetown- low reach
Tufts- reach
Emory- low reach
Wake Forest- high match
Amherst- reach
Williams- reach
Swarthmore- reach
Bowdoin- reach
Middlebury- reach

I am guessing you want to be in NE so I would take off some far reach schools and look into University of Rochester, Brandeis, Colby, Bates, Mount Holyoke College, Bryn Mawr, Skidmore College, St. Lawrence University. Most of these would be high matches/matches.

Well obviously I won’t be applying to all these schools, so I need to eliminate some. How would you guys eliminate the schools? Also, where would Cornell be around for me? I’m guessing reach but a better chance than Dartmouth, Brown, Uni Chi, Georgetown???

Also, am I allowed to do EA and ED at the same time and just withdraw my EA apps if I get accepted into me ED school?

If you apply to ILR as opposed to arts and sciences at Cornell you would have a decent shot, espeially with slightly higher scores. You would have a much, much better shot there than at Brown or Dartmouth (these are likely not in reach, even with a 2200) and about an equal shot to that at Georgetown. Chicago is hard to predict these days.

not interested in irl =/ what would make me a better candidate for arts and sciences? Also, is there any way for me to get aid from cornell

*Second, I need money and lots. *

Academics:
GPA: 4.2-4.3 UW
Rank: 1st Decile and there are about 250 students in my class
SAT: 660/660/710 and 730/670/660 (I know my scores are low but I have been doing well on my practice tests and I am predicitng around 2200 although I can never be sure how I will do on the actual test.

It sounds like you’ve selected some/many of your schools because they’re good with aid. However, it’s possible that you won’t get to these schools if your later test scores aren’t much higher.

Do you know if you’ll qualify for aid? Many kids need aid, but don’t qualify for the aid that they need because their EFC is too high.

Do know what your FAFSA EFC will likely be? Do you know if your family will pay its expected family contribution? Are you low income? Do you have a non-custodial parent?

You need match and financial safety schools - otherwise you could end up without any acceptances or affordable choices.

It looks like you have a 1400 M+CR SAT. That score will get you some good sized scholarships at some schools. You need to apply to a couple of those schools for financial safety schools.

You mentioned accounting which is why I thought the business school would be a fit. It’s part of the NYS land grant schools at Cornell with not as high a bar to get in. Your stats are loe for a & s.

Cornell meets need for all accepted, so if you have demonstrated need, you would get aid.

irl is a business school??

what am i lacking for the CAS in Cornell?

Is it a good decision to get rid of Dartmouth,Brown, Tufts, Georgetown, williams, amherst, swarthmore from my list even if i get a 2200? Also, is it good to eliminate JHU and Carnegie Mellon if I do not want to major in engineering or med.

bumpppppppppppp

The problem now is scores, a better score could put you in the running.

I saw that you mentioned that you were looking for aid from Cornell, but you didn’t think you were good enough. I dont know if this is good or bad for you (i dont know your financial situation) but Cornell doesn’t offer merit-based aid. all their financial aid is need-based, so if you get those scores up and you get in, they’ll base your aid on what your family can pay for, not your grades :]

what sat 1 and subject scores would put me in a better place?

and i need merit based aid…damn it…i guess its private scholarships and my families pocket.

What do you want to major in ? As far as your list is concerned, I think you need more matches and safeties. With your stats, you are unlikely to get into most of the schools you’ve picked. Being Asian is (unfortunately) also a disadvantage nowadays.

Yes I am aware of that. From the schools listed I’m just going to apply to maybe about three schools. Idk what I wantto major in so that’s why this is so difficult for me. Any school is open to me. So most important for me is prestige and name, not programs or whatever. I’m thinking about Emory because my hs has a near hundred percent acceptance rate and my stats are a little bit higher(just looking at gpa and sats). Would it be stupid to use my ED on cornell?

What would be good matches? I really liked BC when I visited but I’m not eligible for aid from them…suckers…

bumppppppppppppp
