I am currently a junior who is planning on majoring in computer science for a career in software engineering. I am applying to various notable tech schools in the eastern portion of the US (RPI, CMU, Georgia Tech, Case Western, Wisconsin etc.). I am aware that most major software firms are located in California with satellite locations in other cities.

Would I have trouble or be at a disadvantage when applying for a software engineering job in California with a degree from a school in the east?

If the school is not that well known to employers out of the area, those out of area employers are less likely to send recruiters to that school’s career center. In that case, you would have to do more searching for companies to apply to than if you were at a well known school or a school local to the employers. MIT and CMU are well known enough to attract recruiters from all over, but some other schools may only be well known regionally.

Also, the very smallest of startup companies may not have the time or money to send recruiters to any but local universities. Those might also be hardest to find and apply to for an out of area applicant.
