three times is the absolute max in my opiinon. any more times than that and it just seems desperate. a fourth even third time would only be justified if the increase from the first to second is almost as great as the jump from the second to third and so on.

Ok in my case I have taken it 3 times (one in freshman, sophmore, and junior year) and so far I have increased 100 points every time (out of 1600). I need another 50-75 point increase in my SATs to get into the colleges I am looking and so is it a bad thing if it take it again? I am also confident that I can increase.

irishblues: i think you'd be okay taking it again, since your tests were so spread out. it seems like taking it 3 times in junior year would be much more frowned upon.

but then again, that's just an opinion.

I took it twice and did just fine in admissions.

I don't care if you take it a million times, they don't give a damn. A secretary takes the highest scores, verifies them, and that's all the admissions officers see. Unless you did something insane I doubt it crosses their mind.

My suspicion is that if you take it 3 times and get perfect scores on all three subjects(technically you have perfect score for SAT I) but top colleges can still reject you so they can claim they reject people with perfect score(2400). I think it's amazing if you take it once and score 2400. I know for a fact that the 3 kids at my D school who scored 2400(one sitting) last year all got into Yale.

Yeah, the kid in my school who got 2400 also got into Yale

SOmebody on this site took the SAT 5 times and got a 2400 superscore and got into Yale and Harvard (just wanted to put that out there)

Colleges don't reject people with 2400 just so they can claim they can. Colleges that do that are extremely selective to begin with.

if you like the ACT you can take it as many times as you want and only send the scores you like (score choice); SAT does not offer this option
