i'm a soph in high school, what does this college mail mean? I took the PSAT (83% V 82%M 71% W) and the plan. does the mail from the colleges just about say i have a really good chance at getting in?

Not really.

Colleges want a lot of people to apply and get rejected to say they have low admission rates.

Nope. You'll get mail from great schools, as well as schools you have never heard of in your life. Just wait until next year. That's when the massive amounts of college mail really start.

Yup, I second the other two posts. That type of mail from colleges never means you have a really good chance of getting in- they just bought your name from the testing organizations.

For example, I got mail/viewbooks/etc from EVERY Ivy, and I definitely don't have a 'good chance' at getting into any of them.

If only I made up a fake email address on that psat, I keep gettin crap from St. Johns and their deadline has passed already, leave me alone!

For the most part, it's just college advertising.

Use this to your advantage, though. Yes, it can be overwhelming, but it's also a great way to start learning about schools, to hear about schools that might otherwise stay off your radar, and to begin getting a feel for what you want in a college.

If you're getting an email from a school that definitely doesn't interest you, just use your spam filter (if your email client has one).

yea...colleges buy student's information based on what scores they get on the psat. like everyone else is saying, it really doesn't mean anything. i remember days when i'd get like 7 or 8 viewbooks in a day...obviously, its a bit of an ego-boost, but it doesn't really mean anything, and definitely doesn't mean you have a better chance of being accepted.

kindaslick - A lot of the schools that frequent my inbox keep extending their deadlines for me, and waiving the app. fee. I hope that one day they realize I do NOT wish to apply ever.

They sort of do that for everyone I think. But I guess it's pretty sweet if you want an ego boost lol.

They do that with everyone. I got mail from so many places. Perfectedxchaos, it's the same with me! It's good for initial research about college. But, realize, that it's just automatically sent. Recycle it well!

Is there a way to unsubscribe from the mailing lists? It seems like the same 5 colleges keep emailing me at least 2x every week.

Contact the colleges and tell them that you do not want to be contacted.

Usually at the bottom of the emails there's a link to click if you don't want to receive further mailings.

then you have to do it for everyone one ==;;
