:-h Hi

My name is Erin and I'm currently a junior in high school. I actually have a few colleges in mind maybe right now 3. But I'm slowly narrowing my choices down. My biggest concern about my degree and major and career after college. I do realize that not all colleges are the same but I suppose this would be just in general.

I plan on going to school to major in Art. I decided that maybe a year ago and recently decided to major in art and minor in music performance as I've been in orchestra playing the viola for 5 years, going on 6. (Started in Middle School/Junior High and continued through high school). I really do have a passion for both, but I'd say I favor art over music just a tiny bit more.

My Mom is very supportive of me deciding to major in Art, unlike a lot of parents, she isn't trying to constantly force me to major in something what people identify as "practical" the STEM majors. Her only concern is that I go to school for something I will enjoy doing for the rest of my life and that I will be successful enough to be able to support myself in the world. :) Her friend recently told me about considering doing a major in art and a double minor in music and business as that minor will help me with basic finance/marketing.

But I guess this will all come down to the type of degree I will be pursuing. If I get a BA in Art I know that it will be more gen. ed. focus and that if I get a BFA it will be more fine arts focused. I've looked at some of the course catalogs and the courses for BA seem fine with me as it will allow time for courses outside of art. The BFA, I'm not 100% sure I will be able to get into the program as a freshman. I might have to wait my 2nd year or 3rd and get a BFA in 5-6 years, I realize that.

My only question with a BFA is that, with so much of it focused on the Art major, will i have time for electives OUTSIDE of Art. I'm interested in so many of the college courses on the catalogs. For instance I may want to take a psychology elective for fun, english/creative writing elective, sciences (botany or astronomy), film, and of course: music/orchestra. I guess what I'm asking is if a BFA in art would allow all these non-art major electives?

And THEN there's post-college (may be appropriate for another thread). I really don't want to have to get a Bachelor's in art and then a master's in education and to go and teach art in school. :| , that's like my last resort. I know some artistic related careers I would be interested in would be: Commercial Art, Animation, Film, Art Directing, Cinematography, Orchestra Musician, Writer.

Thanks :)
