I applied to a few colleges as undecided, and some in pre nursing if they made me declare a major. As a lot of freshman, I really don't know exactly what to major in but have been thinking about a few things. I looked up auburn university's majors (was accepted as pre nursing student) and looked at the curriculum for the majors. Communication disorders is something that I have thought of and when I saw the curriculum, there are full loads of courses to take starting freshman year. In that case, doesn't it mean I can't graduate in time if I don't start and end with the same major? Another thing is that my dad really wants me to take math, but it is not in the curriculum and it would be way too much with it. What do I do?!

There are just a few majors where you really have to start freshman year. Nursing is usually one, so is engineering. Most other majors you can start as late as Jr year if you have the prerequisites. If you think you are pretty interested in nursing, then start out with it and switch later if you change your mind. If you don’t enter as a nursing major it can be difficult or impossible to switch into, but you can always switch out. If you don’t have room for math in your program you will just have to explain to your father that it is important to adhere to the curriculum in the program you are in and not let outside classes distract you because nursing classes are very difficult and you need to focus on excelling in those. Try to avoid the subject, there is no reason to talk about individual classes right now. When fall comes, just enroll in what the program advises. A parent should not be picking coursework for a student. You have a college adviser who will know better.

What I’m really trying to say is that will auburn make me take the classes for pre nursing since that’s what I applied for? Or can I just take whatever I want until I have my major figured out. It seems really strange that they had a full course load for four years of each major, that really worried me since I’m not decided about my major or career path. It seemed that all the classes on the curriculum were required to graduate but I could be wrong. I want to use my freshman year to take general ed requirements and a couple classes that I am interested in.

I’m saying I’m pretty sure now that nursing is NOT what I want to do.
