I’m going to begin my junior year next month, and I want to start thinking about what I want to pursue. I’m not exactly sure what I want to do, but I would like something that focuses a lot on math/science/technology. Right now some of my options I have are:
-Computer Science
-Engineering (Biomedical mainly, but others as well)
-Medicine (I’m not sure about this one)
I’d like to know how some of you went about it on how to find what you want to pursue, and how you narrowed it down to a specific major.
Keep in mind medicine is not a major. You do any major you want along with pre-med reqs.
You should do things that relate to the majors you want to do. Like for computer science learn the basics of coding and see if you like it. If you interested in being a doctor, volunteer at a hospital and see if that’s the kind of environment you would enjoy working in, etc.
I’m a computer science major going into my last year of college. I mostly just started programming the summer before college and found that I liked it. Programming is an easy thing to do by yourself - if you google you will find that there are plenty of free resources and free online classes that will teach you how to program. I’d just use one of those resources and learn some basic programming to see if you like it (even if you don’t, it’s a useful skill to have).
Engineering is harder to do by yourself since it requires materials. You could try getting an internship somewhere. The same goes for medicine. I’d also recommend reading books written by engineers or doctors about what engineering / medicine is like. I’d be especially careful with medicine - medical school is both very intensive and very expensive, and it can end up being a bad choice unless you really want to be a doctor. Computer science and engineering are more flexible choices in my opinion.
You can message me if you have any questions. I wish you the best of luck.
