College Major

Hello, I am currently attending a two year community college then transferring to NC State University after one or two years at the community college, I really need to make up my mind for what I want to do/major and I have no idea really at all. I'm wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction or help me choose, I'll just place some criteria on here that I am looking for.

-I thought and am still thinking about law, although 4 years then another 6 years or so for law school plus the LSAT I think it would be very difficult, especially in making money and what I wish I could do later on as a corporate lawyer would be EXTREMELY difficult.

-I was thinking about computer engineering but I'm not sure.

-I like to argue, and talk
-I love to help people
-Of course I want to make money (Preferably a lot, who doesn't)
-I don't want a job that will eventually be bad in the future economy (I kind of like medical, but I can have certification with EMS if I wanted after or even during college or now, I'm taking the EMT certification course now, and can further up for a Paramedic)
-I'm a lifeguard and I love the job and helping people
-I've wanted to be a police officer for a while, but the job isn't really paying well, not that its a lot of training, its just..I don't know..
-I wanted to be an agent of some sort, but I think/heard it's extremely difficult..

Please help, List other any good majors that pay well that you think I'd like or some courses I could take so I could work several jobs until I find the one I want, I don't want to specifically major in something and then hate it and have to go back to school

Engineering at State is very difficult; they weed out a lot of students. My advanced chemistry and advanced physics teacher in high school was originally an engineering students at NC State and scored a 1550 on the SAT I (out of 1600). He couldn’t hack it and ended up with a degree in Economics (although he did a lot of drinking, partying, and procrastinating – anyhow, he was a wonderful, very gifted teacher). If you plan on doing computer engineering at State, take very difficult math and science class at your CC.

I don’t think that computer engineering sounds like a major for people that crave interpersonal interaction. It is also my opinion that wanting to help people might not mesh with the realities of the legal profession. As for the field of federal, state or local law enforcement, I think those sound like they may have what you are looking for in a career. I know that many such departments prefer or demand that their employees have a college degree, and some seem to prefer prior military experience.

FWIW, I know people who held college degrees in unrelated areas and went to work in law enforcement and love it. Some areas can be very difficult to get into. Maybe you could talk to people in those fields and research the employment criteria.

That said, there are many jobs that would allow you to help people. In the medical area, you could also consider being an ER nurse or Physican Assistant. With your EMT background, you might like emergency medicine.

You sound like a physical person, since you speak of EMT and lifeguarding. Consider whether you would like to be moving around at work (such as law enforcement or emergency medicine) or if you would like to work in a more sedentary job (such as you might find in law or computer engineering.)
