College Matches

Hey guys, I'm applying to college soon and I really don't have any idea where I want to go besides the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. I have looked at Washington University in St. Louis, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, University of Virginia, and Georgetown.

My academics:
GPA: 3.66 UW, 3.77 W
Class rank: apparently my school doesn't do rankings

ACT best score
Composite: 29
English: 33
Math: 26
Reading: 31
Science: 25

SAT: 1790 (yeah I'm not gonna break this one up, it's just embarrassing, and I don't plan on using it.)

Advanced Classes:
AP Government
AP English (2 years)
AP French
AP US History
AP Economics
AP Psychology

ECs:
National Honor Society
Project LEAD (volunteering)
Students Against Destructive Decisions Secretary
Asian Club President
French Club
Diversity Forum
Model UN
Environmental Club
AMAG (school magazine)
Orchestra (3 years)
Pit Orchestra
Track and Field (3 years)

I am interested in majoring in English, Economics, or Business and will probably going into law.

As for the schools, size doesn't matter too much but I would prefer bigger schools. Nothing like Ivy leagues because I know I won't get in.

For location, Midwest or East coast would be fantastic. West Coast is a dream, but nothing that requires SAT IIs because I don't have any.

If any schools come to mind please tell me! Any matches will be appreciated! Thank you!

It would really help if you provided more information about school preference. To sum up what you already said, you don’t care where the school is (so the entire country), you are interested in generic fields, and school size isn’t that big of a deal. No offense, but that might just include 93% of all colleges across the country. So, any suggestions would really be worthless without a little more to help us help you!

On another note, WashU and Georgetown are most likely not worth applying to given your stats. Unless you are in-state, Michigan, UVA, and UNC will be big reaches as well. Michigan is a little more generous to out of state students, but UVA and UNC can be very selective when applying OOS. Even if you are in-state, any of those schools will be big reaches. Sorry.

my stats are extremely similar to yours, and I am applying to: University of Michigan, University of Virginia, American University, College of William & Mary, and Cornell & Duke as my reaches. hope this helps :)

Yes, I do realize my information is really generic but to be completely honest ANY suggestion would help. I live in Michigan so University of Michigan is pretty much a back up. And I agree Wash U and Georgetown are way out of reach, and probably same with UVA and UNC. My information is so broad because since those schools are ruled out, I’m left with University of Michigan, so anything will help. I’ll edit it up and be more specific, thanks for the input.

Maybe I just missed it but I didn’t see any info about what you can afford. Do you need FA or merit aid?

Might look at Holy Cross-SAT optional school with good economics and english majors. HC has very nice campus-1 hour from Boston.

@par72: thank you for the suggestion I will take a look at Holy Cross.

@Erin’s Dad: Sorry, I totally forgot about FA/Merit Aid. I will probably apply for both but it is unlikely that I will get too much money. I can afford around probably around 25,000 dollar tuitions.

How about Northeastern, Tufts, and Syracuse… they all have solid business programs and would probably be matches for you.

Hey Kevin. Why don’t you try an online college matching site to get a list? College confidential has a college search site and [The Honest College Matchmaker’s College Match Quiz. It’s Fast, it’s FREE, it’s unbiased.](http://www.myUsearch.com) is great as well. Good luck!

With your stats and a $25K budget, it looks like you’re going to Michigan. We could list other schools, but to get merit to bring it down to $25K, the school would be far below Michigan in quality.

@surgeofindia14: thanks I’ll take a look
@letmeinnow: maybe i’ll check it out, thanks
@redroses: yeah, i kinda agree, i posted up here because i’m really trying to get out of state. I said 25k because i don’t wanna press my parents too much, but i can probably afford up to 36k. I just don’t want to put too much pressure on my parents.

And to be honest, it’s ok if the class is under University of Michigan. Like surgeofindia14 suggested Syracuse, it’s ranked below Michigan but it can definitely be an option. So really anything works, liberal arts colleges, or other universities.

“How about Northeastern, Tufts, and Syracuse… they all have solid business programs and would probably be matches for you.”

Tufts does not offer a business program. The closest thing that it offers is a major in economics. It would also be a serious reach given your stats. Sorry to be blunt.

You should check out the University of Maryland and the University of Miami. I think these would be matches for you.

“I live in Michigan so University of Michigan is pretty much a back up.”

I hate to break it to you, but Michigan is not a safety school with your stats.

^Agreed. None of the schools the OP has listed are safeties or matches and being in-state for a public school does not mean it will be a safety. Michigan has recently joined the Common App so expect it to become even more competitive.

@rjkofnovi and schrizto: Don’t worry about Michigan, I know for sure that I’m safe there. Even though my stats aren’t stellar, they match up to Michigan’s standards. I know alumni and others so you guys can stop telling me about the schools I’m not going to get in. I made this thread to ask for schools that are probably below the University of Michigan, and half these posts are about which schools I’m not getting into.

So please, stop telling me I’m not getting into Michigan. I know what’s going on especially with this University. I’m looking for other options which will probably be below this University. So unless you’ve got similar stats, a similar application, and by some miracle similar essays, and got rejected by the University of Michigan, then please enlighten me about how my stats aren’t good enough, if not please stop telling me about how I’m not getting in. All right? Thank you.

@tuftsalum12: thank you for answering the question, I will take a look at these colleges.

“So unless you’ve got similar stats, a similar application, and by some miracle similar essays, and got rejected by the University of Michigan, then please enlighten me about how my stats aren’t good enough, if not please stop telling me about how I’m not getting in.”

I never said you weren’t a match for Michigan. I said Michigan normally isn’t a safety for someone with your stats. Can you understand the difference? If you are indeed a shoe in for U-M, it isn’t based on your academic numbers.

I understand the difference, and please understand that my school has a very high amount of entrances into U of M. Many people below my stats and above my stats go, from 3.0s to 4.0s, they get in. All I know is, people from my school get in, and I probably won’t be much different. I know my stats aren’t amazing, but they match up to U of M’s standards and admission probably won’t be a problem since U of M is more lenient with in state applicants. I understand it might be odd for me to say with my stats that Michigan is a “safety school” but that’s how I’m going to phrase it.

I just really want suggestions on other schools.

You could get a $7-10K scholarship at Miami U (that’s the original one in Ohio). Good B school and pretty good English program.

I think Syracuse would be a good match for you. You should seriously look into it. Just a personal opinion, no offense to anyone. Btw I’m a senior and i’m looking into that college too.
