College Math

Hey guys, I got a problem and wanted to ask you guys for advice. I attend Santa Monica College and I just finished my first semester. When I applied, I placed into the lower level math classes, College Algebra and Geometry. I took and passed College Algebra this semester but now I can't add Geometry for neither winter or spring. These two classes are required before taking Precal.

The sequence is College Algebra+Geometry--> Precal---> Calculus 1--->Calculus 2---> Other Higher Level Math Courses

I am applying for Fall 12 at UCB, UCLA as a Cognitive Science major. For my prerequisites, UCB requires me to take Calculus 1 and another higher math course after Calculus 2, although the higher level math course can be taken at UCB if admitted. As for UCLA, I need to go up to Calculus 2. At my pace I'll be lucky to take Calculus 1 during Spring 12. Sorry for the long background story but what do you guys recommend I do?

What did you get for a grade in your college algebra class? If you received an A they might let you skip Geometry (I have a hard time believing this is a separate course) and go right into pre-calculus.

You can also try testing out of it if they don’t allow you to skip it. However, at my school they’ll give you the go ahead if you get an A in alg.

Yeah, your best bet is to try and test out of it. Spend a good two or three weeks really cramming, and try and get good enough to pass the assessment test’s geometry component.

I got an A for algebra but unfortunately that’s no enough to skip geometry at SMC. However, I can take a challenge exam to skip geometry but I just recently learned about it over the weekend. I sent an email requesting the test but I haven’t received a reply. If my request is approved, I have three weeks to study before my requested test date. Hopefully I can pass and crash a precal course for spring(: At this point, I’m just trying to prepare for the worst.
