College Music Fair at Eastman

<p>If you are in upstate NY and have a musical high schooler you might want to check out this college fair on Wednesday night, October 18th at 6:00, although there is a quite a line up of activities earlier. Quite a good selection of music schools all in one place!</p>

<p>An impressive gathering for a first time event... where's Curtis?</p>

<p>Ultimately, it seems like a promo event for Eastman. I can't imagine that this fair will do much for any current seniors, who have likely explored their options and decided long ago on their choices. And are they serious that the fair itself will last all of 1 hour and 45 minutes? I suppose if you live in upstate NY, it's worth the trek. Surprising that several California musical institutions are represented (though not UCLA). I can envision the long lines for certain conservatories.</p>

<p>seems like a good lineup.There is a travelling Performing Arts NACAC fair but this seems to be the first music specific one. Short time period and an odd location for anyone familiar with the Eastman campus (balcony of the theater??).It would be good as an intro for HS underclassmen and perhaps is geared to the Eastman community music school population?</p>

Ha! I doubt Curtis feels any need whatsoever to recruit.</p>

I'm not sure, but I think they must mean that large area behind the balcony, not the actual balcony.</p>

<p>I too thought it seemed awfully short - but it is their first time doing this so I suppose they'll reevaluate afterwards. I can see it being helpful to all high school music students, many of whom are still trying to figure out how to go about choosing a music school. Doing it at Eastman brings in many talented upstate musicians who are affiliated with the Eastman Community Music School - kids from Syracuse, Buffalo, Rochester etc. attend the Eastman Community School for lessons (some studying with collegiate faculty), classes and ensembles.</p>

<p>I also think it could be helpful (if this caught on) for serious music students who want to major in something else, but continue to participate in music. That's an area where it seems harder to get good information...</p>

Weenie, yes... this is true... but take a look at some of the other conservatories and colleges being represented.</p>

<p>Certainly, two of the three hosts of this event (Juilliard and Eastman) do not have a need to "recruit" either. As well, there's Peabody and other conservatories in the same category. For a non-conservatory path, Rice's Shepherd School of Music is among the best in the country, and is highly selective for music majors. Curtis just seemed to stand out by its absence.</p>

<p>The more I think about it, I think it will be a cool event... but mostly cool for Eastman. BTW, a few years ago, my daughter took a master class from Tony Caramia, piano prof at Eastman, and he's a great cheerleader for the school.</p>
