don't forget to bring tons of underwear and socks!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!

I think my mother should just give me a gift certificate for some sock store because 1. I love socks and stockings and 2. there is a Black Hole of Single Sockness that radiates from me...

You and me both. I tend to lose socks in my bed at night. Never both socks, just one. Then I won't find it again until I strip my bed and shake things loose.

I'd bring bottled water, even if you don't have a mini-fridge. In some places, tap water is a bit... drinkable, but not favorable. The bottled water may be a bit warm, but at least its better than the bathroom faucet.

I think I will. And a water filter and an electric kettle.

My family is so incredibly paranoid about our drinking water. We have some of the safest tap water in the state of MA, where the water tastes kind of sweet and fragrant, and where most people just drink from the faucet. And yet my mother filters the water TWICE and boils it before she allows any of us to drink it.

O_o.

wow, that's some pretty clean water!
i don't know, i like a little cancer in my water. :)

Is a water filter a better option than buying bottled water? How much does a good filter cost?

You can get a good water filter for under $20... bottled water is expensive. I have a Brita filter in my room, I never drink tap water, and haven't for years.

Here's some things that aren't needed but I've found to be quite useful:
Plastic drawer set on wheels
Small table to place next to best
Expandable folder/organizer....I stick syllabi from my classes and other papers in there

thanks Sook! I actually have one or two expandable folders at this point in time.

Does anyone have any ideas for someone who accumulates stuff at the velocity of a black hole?

well, if you're talking about the sock thing, i have a thing in my sock drawer that organizes socks.

There are a LOT of threads on the old forum about dorm room necessities, including multiple threads about beds. Here's one: http://www.collegeconfidential.com/discus/messages/70/48930.html

If you do a message search with "mattress" as the search term in the parents forum of the old CC, you'll find a lot of information.

Where can you find a micro-fridge? I know many universities allow you to rent one for the academic year, but I've never seen one outside of dorms.

sears should be ok:

I was talking about the one's with a microwave, freezer, and refrigerator all together. UCLA offers them for rent.

this one has a freezer too: http://www.microfridge.com/catalog/product.cgi/1/10/1/P1/default/N/0

it's a little pricey (sometimes!) but this store looks like it has some useful things. especially college specific items. i think they have a sale during the pre-college weeks and will usually have it delivered straight to your dorm in preparation - so you don't have to lug it to your school. also sears for appliances. They have way bigger fridges for less money than mircofridge.com. you can get a mircowave for $50 and usually there are warranties on everything.

Great thread! This has helped me as well, since I was wondering what sort of (unlisted) things one should bring to college. Great idea, tebro!

thank my mum! I'm her first-born, about to go off into the great unknown, and she is so incredibly tense about everything.

"here's a new bathrobe for college."
"um. mom, I have a nice thick flannel one already."
"you can't bring it."
"...why not?"
"because you're going to college."

granted, it was a very lovely bathrobe, in dove gray and embroidered with peonies, but the point is that I think she's doing the "nesting" thing in order to reassure herself that I'll be all right.

Tebro: I'm reading Crime and Punishment and was looking up words; guess what was one of them? A peony! I now know it's Eurasian plant with a big flowers.
