A high-powered dirt devil is always good - or a broom.

Watch out if you purchase things as you move in: everyone else does the same thing, and the stores are often wiped out. Get the egg crate mattress beforehand or have it delivered to your dorm; you won't be able to find one in a 20-mile radius of any college come the beginning of September.

At my college a guy whose dad had a carpet business made out like a bandit selling 12x12 squares of carpet remnant to all the frosh, because most of the dorms had tile floors...

a note about the mini-fridges:
at the school i'm going to be attending, you're allowed to bring a mini-fridge, but the only kind of microwave you can have is a university-issued one. and the only way to get one of those is by renting it in conjunction with a mini-fridge (they're bolted together). just wanted to let y'all know that different schools may have different policies and you may want to look into them before purchasing stuff.

According to my daughter, the best gift she got for graduation (besides checks) was a large jar filled with quarters for laundry. Get yourself a pretty jar with a lid, and start saving now!

..too bad some schools have to be all high tech and use laundry cards instead. I have $20 in quarters with which I could get some SERIOUS laundry done, but instead I have to search for money to put money on the card :( (oops, just a little vent moment there)

The best thing that I brought....a nice little electric Dustbuster. Practically everyone in my building has borrowed it so far this year! They're perfect for cleaning up crumbs, dirt, leaves tracked in from outside, etc. Just make sure you get a halfway powerful one; the cheaper ones tend to lose their charge quickly and don't recharge well.

From my brief experience at UCLA, which might or might not apply to other schools, no painting on the walls and you can't tack stuff unless on a strip that runs across or if you use tack board. Tape is a good friend in that case.

I don't think a suit is really necessary for the everday kind of affair; perhaps maybe if the guy enjoys going to the theatre (like the Ahmanson in L.A., etc.) or planning to do job interviews or what not.
