I may just move in dimwitted circles but when my D mentioned to family members and friends that she was applying to uPenn, everyone wanted to know how she could reconcile her views with the events in the football dept.

My daughter made the Wesleyan mistake. When she got into her early college, she sent an e-mail withdrawing her application from Wesleyan University. Only she sent it to Wesleyan College. Oops.

Similar abbreviations that are sometimes mentioned here without explanation include UA (AL, AR, AZ) and UW (WA, WI, WY).

Hampton University / Hampden - Sydney College ?

@WasatchWriter‌ As a student in Oklahoma, originally from California and who lived in Montana, I am frequently confused when I see a Midwestern student discussing OSU, OU, MSU, UM, or UW. To me they clearly mean Oklahoma/ Oregon State, University of Oklahoma, Montana State, University of Michigan, and University of Washington although I suppose the rest of the country doesn’t agree with me.
