College Newspapers

Am I the Lone Ranger or do others read their S & Ds (S - sophomore at mid-size state U and D - EA at Ivy) college newspapers online? My W can't believe it, but I find that I can keep up with what is going on and what is upcoming at their campuses. Often I know more about what is going at his school on than my S.

UMDad, you are not alone. I know I and several of our "regulars" subscribe to the online papers at our kids' schools. It's also a great idea for prospective students and their parents.

I love to do that. Especially now, that son is contributing as a staff writer. I'd love to post his articles here (proud mama bragging shamelessly) but that would give his name away, so I'm showing considerable restraint. :)

My oldest DD a junior at a big in-state uni brings home her school's paper everyday. She glances at it and leaves it on the table for me. Some days I read it, some days it goes in the bunny's cage as a liner!

Seriously, since the campus is so big and so much is going on there, sports, arts, dance, music, speakers it is nice to keep up with what is happening and some of the classifieds are hysterical. Also there are always coupons and specials for some of the eateries in the area so that is always fun to try new places to eat.

My son tells his friends that his Mom reads the newspaper and website to see if he's in trouble. The funniest thing happened just yesterday. I was looking for the spring break schedule on the school's website. I clicked on the student affairs page. The picture on the web page was of our family (Dad and little sister) during move in day!!! I couldn't resist linking it to my son. We had no idea they were taking pictures.

I sometimes do but not on a regular basis.

Funny story: A friend of mine who has a son at University of Chicago got a surprise when reading their student newspaper last year. Apparently, the students there have a winter tradition of running naked through the campus in the snow in a Polar Bear Run. She logged on one morning and clicked on the bookmark and voila! A photograph of her naked son and others was staring her in the face. :)

I try to read the Dartmouth online daily (I hate to admit it but I do sometimes laugh at some of the police blotters)

with the discussions about rushing I did read articles this week about the greek gpa's and sophmores not getting bids in the recent sorority rush

<a href="http://www.thedartmouth.com/article.php?aid=2005020401030%5B/url%5D">http://www.thedartmouth.com/article.php?aid=2005020401030</a></p>

My daughter's school paper is not online at the moment but we subscribe to it (it's a weekly). Even though the news isn't quite up to date by the time we get it, reading it helps fill us in on things we might not find out otherwise. And yes, the police blotter is fun to read as long as one assumes one isn't reading about one's own child. I certainly agree that college newspapers are an excellent source of information for prospective students as well as current parents.

We subscribe to the paper version as well. This semester the school created a secure portal for parents, much like what the students have been using--so I visit often for campus news, weather etc...

Inspired by this thread to check the Washington Square News, since I hadn't in a couple of weeks, I had a look and found this enlightening article.

<a href="http://www.washingtonsquarenews.com/news/campus/8805.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.washingtonsquarenews.com/news/campus/8805.html</a></p>

I read college newspapers online religiously - I find them an excellent way to get information and insights into students and administrative issues on college campuses. I think everyone should read as many back issues as possible of the student newspaper of any college they are considering.

That's where you'll find out that students are complaining about being shut out of courses, that certain departments are weak, that there are problems between different groups getting along on campus, etc. It's another information source, and of course shouldn't be taken as the ONLY source of information, but it is often invaluable if you really want to "know" a school.

By the way, there's a great site that has links to thousands of college student newspapers - Here it is: <a href="http://newslink.org/statcamp.html%5B/url%5D">http://newslink.org/statcamp.html</a></p>

I agree with that. A lot of news is uncovered that way. It's better than campusdirt.com. I have the above link in my favorites as well. Although I don't need to get the goings on of any college, except my son's, it still gives me a feel for gossip on campus.
