Chances for:
Stanford
Cornell
Columbia
Brown
NYU and other top 30 (with full ride)
Rest of ivy league
BS/MD programs (HPME,PLME, Rice/Baylor etc. etc.)

If you’re into bs/md programs like plme, it can help a lot to win some research-related awards from competitions like siemens, yes and isef. (intel sts doesn’t apply to rising seniors yet) What prestigious rsch program did you get into? (something like RSI?)

I don’t know where you’re from geographically and your race (those two factors play a role), but comparing you to students from top schools in NYC (where i’m from), you didn’t stand out too much just from reading your info above.

Stanford (stretch)
Cornell (you’ll probably get in)
Columbia (don’t think so)
Brown (maybe)
NYU and other top 30 (with full ride), - i dunno about full ride. but NYU should be piece of cake for you. JHU, washU in st. louis and U of C might be good choices for you.
Rest of ivy league (stretches)
BS/MD programs (HPME,PLME, Rice/Baylor etc. etc.) - I don’t think so.

You have a year to work on scores–focus some effort on raising them.

hmom - thanks for the advice. However, I have given my ACT 5 times already with scores 29, 28,30, 32, 30. Everytime i improve in one section, I decrease in another. Now my highest 32 is the only one on my transcript and so I can take it again but I feel I can make better use of my time just concentrating on my 5 APs, college apps, and work this coming up year. Any more advice will be appreciated.

yangx88- thank you so much for ur advice. Really helped put things in perspective. Can you tell me how I can improve before apps are due in December?

Additional information:

I am very low income (20K-24K) and have been working since 10th grade to help out my family.

Ethnicity: Asian Indian

bumpppppppp pleaseee

With a well-written personal essay, I can see you getting into Cornell and/or Brown. Full ride to NYU (and schools ranked near it) is doubtful, but you can definitely get a half-ride and apply for financial aid for the rest.

BS/MD programs are ridiculously competitive, you don’t have to scores to get in.

Have you tried the SAT? I think Stanford, Brown, Columbia and ivies other than Cornell are highly unlikely with a 32.

You have a slim chance at Brown and NYU. Other than that no chances at other school

^thank you for the responses. Any way I should improve? Should I retake ACT and hope for better? Are my extracurriculars just not good enough?

My passion is medicine and science and to become a doctor and mostly all of my activities are related in that field.

What should i do to improve my chances at places like Columbia, Cornell, Brown, Yale, Duke, Northwestern, Michigan???

if your passion is medicine, i highly recommend that you attend an easy state school. that will really help with your chance admission to med school. It’s much more competitive get good grade as a premed at school like Stanford, Columbia, Yale. etc. Try to take the SAt and see what happens

i might go for SAT. It is just that I have 5 aps this year, 20 hr/week job, and college apps. I think studying for SAT and giving it will cause me to overload and maybe lose focus in some other area.

Thus, I really dont want to take the test but I might just take it cold and see what happens. Or, I might just take the ACT another time cold and see what happens.

Any other chances? improve my chances?

I think you’re over estimating your chances at a lot of school. I can see how hard it is to support your family financially AND study for school, but nowadays, unless you’re hooked with a URM status, high income, 1st generation, or legacy, a lot of ivies are going to close their doors on you. I have very similar statistics as you, except your GPA is higher. I am applying to NYU ED, and still am scared about my chances. I feel your EC’s are excellent, and would not be surprised if you got into any lower ivy like Cornell, which would be a low reach/high match. Also, try some 7 year MBA/MD programs. I know Union and St. Rose is very famous for their programs. Still apply to ALL of those schools on that list. I know a girl with an 88 GPA and sub 2000 SAT, who got into Cornell, so make sure you never lose faith in yourself. ( She was URM…)

Salam.

I would suggest taking a hard look at what you can improve on the ACT since you have so much experience with the test unless you’ve never tried the SAT.

Any possibility you could cut down on work hours for just the fall so you can dig in and practice until you can up the scores? All the APs and ECs won’t help if you don’t have the scores.

i think i will give my ACT again in september. I dont think i will give my SATs, just because it is going to be too much work and hassle to familiarize myself with the test. I am sure with enough practice i could score well but I dont believe I have the time nor the energy.

I was misled in my junior year and my counselor told me to just focus on ACT and forget about SAT. Then, I found CC and realized she was wrong.

Counselors… I wish schools would take more time into choosing who their counselors are going to be instead of throwing random people to lead students in preparing the next 8 or so years of their life. My counselor told me not to take more than 3 IB classes… I listened to her then. Have not ever again.

So, I decided I will give the ACT one last time and try to bring my reading score up. If I get a 33 or 34, how much will my chances increase?

So, what type of colleges should i aim for? please i need some advice.

bumpppppppppppp

The acceptance rate for Stanford for the Class of 2013 was 7.6%. Stanford is one of the top 5 hardest schools to get into by far.

^thanks for the stats. Indirectly, you meant to say I dont have a chance?

-please recommend some schools that are matches for me…
