My orientation is on Aug 4, so before I go, I would like to figure out what classes I need and should take. I am a Computer Science & Engineering major. I've looked at the GE requirements for HSSEAS, but the pdf is rather cryptic and not very helpful for incoming Freshmen. Can someone please point me to a link or describe how registration and classes in UCLA works, so that I may have the information necessary to choose classes for myself?

You register with your orientation counselor on the third day at 9 AM using URSA. Your department counselor walks you through everything you need to take to graduate on the second day and gives you a list of all the GEs so you can find the ones that interest you. The recommended classes for the first quarter are a math course (depending on the ones you have already taken), Computer Science 31, Computer Science 1, and Chem 20A or a GE.

Please note that I said math course before CS 31. All of the CSE majors in my orientation group took either Math 31B or 32A instead of both Chem20A and a GE.

Hey, I’m also a CSE major who attended orientation 101. On the second day, they go over the classes you will need and you plan your classes the second day so registering on the third day is quick and easy. Most likely, you will be taking a math class (Math 31A, 31B, or 32A, etc depending on what AP exams you’ve passed or community college courses you’ve taken), CS31, CS1 (this is a required seminar) and either Chem 20A or a GE (if you don’t want to take Chem 20A yet or passed your AP exam with a 4 or 5 I believe).

Here is a link of a rough outline of what your classes will be.

Basically, when registering, you will have the ID # of each class from the day before when you planned it out, and you just punch them in and register in your Orientation Counselor’s room on the third day of orientation.
