College Obsession?

I was just wondering whther you know getting into the best college is the only resort for a good student. I mean yeah every college provides a different experience but that does not mean that ONLY schools in the top 50 are good and getting into lower schools would be the end of the world.
INfact i dont think it would make a heck of a difference in terms of pay after graduating, if thats wht you are looking for. I mean ok a Wharton graduate would get 60k and you would perhaps get 50 or 55 k as a start after you graduate from an mediocre school. In the end you and your skills would determine your progress, not your school. I know i sound trite but i do think that not getting into your top choice is not an end all.
I ll give you an example. recently a cousin of mine got into GE after graduating as electronic engineer from U of Connecticut. There was another guy who was there from MIT, getting the same pay and everything.

SO my point is that if you dont get in to a dream uni then dont fret. it perhaps might be for the better than the worse.
WHat do you think guys?

Grads from top schools have a better chance of making more/landing a job initially, but after a few years it becomes trivial and experience/performance takes over.

So I basically agree. If an extra 5 or 10 thousand dollars a year is worth spending 4 or 5 of the better years of your life somewhere you don't really want to be, go for it. personally i would rather go to where I want to go, but i tend to undervalue money compared to alot of people
