Does it seem to either of you (and perhaps your friends) that UMinn places a large emphasis on GPA? I’m OOS with a low overall GPA but strong upward trend and a 35 on the ACT. I applied Genetics, though I hear that it doesn’t really matter for CBS what major you pick b4 entering the school.

@voltronforce0 - they do. And this has changed a bit from a few years ago when a 35 ACT would have gotten you more mileage. Of course, behind every transcript is a story - not all 3.4 - 3.5’s are the same. But I recall CSE kids getting in at the last minute with your stats not too long ago. CBS might be more selective now as well.

Did you specify CLA as a second choice? If not, that might be another reason for a deferral as opposed to an accept into 2nd choice.

@voltronforce0 I feel like there haven’t been many CBS admits as I would have thought. My ACT is in the lower 25% percentile so I would figure someone with a 35 would definitely have a better chance than me. Then again, there could have been something in my application that stood out. I come from a fairly rigorous/ small high school and we send 12-15 students a year, but it’s usually either CSE or CLA. I haven’t heard many getting into CBS. I have also heard that there are not as many men in CBS so that could have helped. Though probably small compared to many other things. I also said UMinn was my top choice which would have indicated interest.

Anyways I don’t want to ramble off, I guess I am trying to say that they do review the application holistically and they don’t put as much emphasis on ACT as GPA (at least in my case). Best of luck to you!

Just found out son made it off of wait list for CBS, not sure what he is doing at this point. He was admitted to CLA first in Jan.

CAmom1- how did you find out ? Did you receive an email ? My daughter is in a similar boat.

CAmom1- what was your sons stats, if you don’t mind sharing?

Randomly logged in and pulled up comm center to notice another communication of admit fall nhs on april 1, so knew he must have come off the wait list. Pulled up tracker to confirm. He has been on a solid track since sophmore year, earning A’s since. He also had a majority of his AP classes this year, so that could have been a factor in the waitlist and seeing what he did with those classes. He did send in his updated grades at semester. GPA is now 3.6 something and ACT is 31. He superscores at a 34 and he sent them all in as sometimes I feel they look at things more closely in cases like this. Good luck to your daughter. Someone did tell me that numbers were high on the female side for CBS, so male factor might play into this as well.
