Please someone help!
My daughter just sent an application via online. She indicated that school in which desired to enroll is College of Business. Is this mean that she will only be considered as a business school applicant? Pitt is her reach school (She has GPA 35 and ACT 28) and I am wondering indicating her desire in enrolling College of Business will make it even harder for the to get in Pitt. Is it better for her to apply to School of Arts and Sciences instead? I will appreciate if someone could give me some suggestion.

Sorry GPA 3.5 (not 35)

Chi. You might want to contact the admission folks, either via phone or on line. They are usually very helpful. Some schools have first choice, 2nd choice as far as admission requests. My D, from what I recall, just put down A & S. With most schools, since business has limited number of seats, competition is usually a bit stiffer. On the other hand, a number of students think business initially and then switch. My S is at Emory Univ,…he originally thought about business, now he is pretty intent on Public Health. I always feel that when in doubt, A & S is the way to go initially. Good luck.

I personally know someone who had lower scores (3.45 GPA and 27 ACT) than that and already has been admitted, but it was for The School of Arts and Sciences. From what I remember from my visit to Pitt, the standards for Business are higher but only slightly, so your daughter should be fine.

And as far as I know, they will consider her only for the College of Business. However, I’m fairly sure that your daughter will in fact get accepted to Pitt regardless of whether she applied to Business or Arts and Sciences (I might be wrong though). I applied on Sunday, so if she applied to today our notifications should come at roughly the same time, so if I remember I’ll tell you when I receive my notification so that you know that you should receive yours shortly.

Thank you for your advise MBJ! I think I will contact with Pitt’s office of admission via e-mail and ask if my daughter could change her choice of school/college from Business to A&S. For her getting in the school is the first priority at this point. Pitt seems wonderful school and we are really hoping that she could be accepted.

Thank you motion12345 for your helpful info. Are you applying to college of business? Good luck to you and please post me when you get notification from Pitt if you remember! My daughter sent her application and requested ACT score on Oct. 8; therefore, her application credentials will be completed around Oct 22. I am assuming that we will get result around mid Nov. My daughter and I are mildly freaked out – finding out the fact that only 319 freshmen enrolled in business college while 2541 did in S & A this year – combined with seeing so many applicants has been accepted this year (congratulation all!), we feel her chance getting in is rather small. She really wants to go Pitt, and if switching her choice of school/college from business to S&A would make the chance of acceptance higher, she will definitely do so.

-I’m applying to A & S, and thanks

-Again, looking at the numbers from last year, and considering Pitt is mainly a numbers school, your daughter should most likely be admitted. Also, the number of people enrolled doesn’t mean much because the statistics don’t say what % of people who applied to the College of Business got accepted, only the number enrolled. The %, though, is probably the same as A & S. The numbers only give you such a scare because A & S gets a lot more applications than the College of Business.

-Also, I’m not sure if Pitt does this (I don’t see why they wouldn’t), but some schools (particularly University of Toronto, that’s the only one that specifically told me that they do it but I’m pretty sure other schools do it as well) apparently concentrate more heavily on your grades/test scores from classes related to your school/major in determining your admission. If your daughter has a higher math subscore but a lower reading subscore for her ACTs or higher grades in math/business classes than in her English/Social Science classes then it might actually be easier to get into the College of Business as opposed to A & S. I’m not sure if Pitt does their admissions like that, though.

acceptance rate for CBA was 45% last year and from skimming through my stuff that I got from Pitt, it seems as though a big thing for CBA is having a well-rounded and challenging curriculum. If your daughter got a 3.5 after a pretty rigorous schedule, then she should be fine, but if she took a bunch of blowoff classes then she might not be.

Thank you again motion12345! Great information and great points! I called Pitt today. It sure sounds like CBA is bit more competitive than S&A unless the candidates have strong math test scores and good grades on math from 9th to 12th. My daughter has only 28 on ACT math. Her math grades in her junior year were As; however, she did get a C during her sophomore year (sophomore slump… you know). According Pitt, having a C on math is sort of fatal for getting in CBA. After all, my daughter is not dying to get in CBA… she just love Pitt and wants to go there … so we are thinking that her applying S&A makes much more sense than sticking with CBA which may or may not lessen her chance of getting in. Good luck to you and my daughter! Hope we both will hear good news in 4 weeks?

I think your daughter has a good chance of getting into CBA and should stick with it if she has no desire for Arts and Sciences. A 28 on the ACT is actually good enough to offset the 3.5 GPA ( And a 3.5 isn’t that bad of a GPA). With good recs, essays, and extracurriculars she should be fine.

Sorry for the late post

Did she get a decision yet?

Thanks! My daughter got letter from Pitt saying that they want to see her mid year grade. She is so far doing pretty good with her 2 AP and 3 honor classes, and her ACT math score went up to 30 – thus, we are assuming her chance getting in is decent. However, she got in PSU ( not business major but undecided) and will be attending there.
Thank you so much for your input though. I really appreciate everyone whom help me in this post!

Ha PSU Smeal > Pitt CBA any day.
