College of Charleston or Samford University

I want to major in History and minor in Philosophy with the plan of either graduate or law school. Which one of these schools would be better for a strong liberal arts education?

I have no familiarity with Samford. I would recommend C of Charleston. Picturesque location (lousy student parking situation, however). Fine academics. Are you a South Carolina resident? If so, C of C should be high on your list.

I am an out of state resident. How hard is it to find housing close to campus? (I've heard that it is extremely difficult)

Samford, but only because I know more about it than I do about CoC.

i haven't visited C of C, but i know that you will receive more personal attention at Samford (which by the way is absolutely lovely)

i'm not sure what more personal attention means by the previous submiter. I go to college of charleston, it is not hard to find housing, first of all if you apply for housing most of the time you will receive it i've lived first in resident halls my freshman year then in my sorority house the next 2 years, now as i senior im living about 10 minutes from campus in apartments on what's called james Island, there are plenty of places to live in charleston or around charleston, parking does suck though i will say that. As for the major i cannot tell you about either but i am part of the religious studies department that was combined with philosiphy. I can tell you this about my experience, i thought i was going to major in a science, i took some classes and decided it didn't interest me. I am not a religious person , but i took a religious studies class just to satisfy a credit. TAking that class with the teacher i took has changed my life, and my interest i am now a religious studies major planning on going to grad school for religious studies. I have never had a bad experience with any one in the religious studies faculty and i've had all but 2 professors from it. Each professor is helpful, will talk 1 on 1 most classes are decent sizes, it is because o fthese professors that i am this major, and that i have found something to be passionate about.... I can only hope to offer that as some kind of help to you may your decision that you make be the best for you! keep in mind that i only took this class because i was filling a requirement for my "liberal arts" and it turned out to be something that will impact me forever, also i don't worry about being accepted to a grad school or getting a job after i finish schooling because college of charleston has such strong programs! my advice would be to go to www.cofc.edu look up the head of the departments and email them.. i'm sure they won't have a problem emailing you back....

oh and by the way college of charleston is one of the most beautiful historical colleges... you have rainbow row, the battery, you have history in the making right in front of you, not to mention king street shopping, and an array of different restaurants! it has a great student life and has been voted numerous times now the best mannered city
