College of Chemistry - Languages?

Hello, I'm a high school senior applying to the CoC and I noticed that they recommend taking at least 2 years of a foreign language in high school, preferably Russian, French, or German. I took 3 years of Spanish, so if I do get accepted and attend the CoC next fall, would I be at a disadvantage because I am not familiar with the recommended languages?

Thank you,

That’s very odd that they say that, where exactly did you find that? You will be fine with Spanish, don’t give it another thought.

I know, it did strike me as being strange as well. I found it on the undergraduate admissions page of the CoC website.
Thank you! (:

Well, I dug it up. It indeed says that. Very few high schools in California even offer Russian or German, and I’m sure some don’t offer French either. So like I said I wouldn’t give it another thought.

[College of Chemistry - University of California at Berkeley - Freshman Admissions](http://chemistry.berkeley.edu/student_info/undergrad_info/prospective_undergrad/admission/freshmen.html)

"Students preparing for the major in chemistry or chemical engineering should include in their high school program: chemistry (one year); physics (one year); mathematics (four years, including trigonometry, intermediate algebra, and analytic geometry); and a foreign language (two years, preferably German, Russian, or French). "

I applied and got into the CoC with 3 years of Spanish and I think most of my peers did as well. The main reason they say those languages is because the powerhouse countries for Chemistry research, aside from the US and UK, are Russia, France and Germany. So, it’s mainly because having a knowledge of them puts you at an advantage for professional work in chemistry.

I really can’t find info on CC to this at all-- but if i apply to the Chemistry under the College of Chemistry, does it lower my chances of admission?

Also, is it hard to transfer from Chemistry from L&S into CoC? What about the other way around?
