I have heard several people say that Cornell's college of engineering is harder to get into than Cornell's College of arts and sciences. I thought it was the other way around, considering that the college of engineering as a far higher acceptance rate than the college of arts and sciences. Could someone please explain about which college is harder to get into.

The attributes of students applying to CAS and the College of Engineering make them both self-selective. Purely looking at admittance rates won’t give you a good picture of which one is harder to get in to. A stellar liberal arts student might not be admitted to engineering and and someone interested in electrical engineering might not find a fit in CAS. My guess is that the engineering admission rate could be lower, because fewer kids want to commit themselves to that type of program unless they want to do it. There are just fewer kids interested in engineering overall.

Why do you ask???

I am no expert here. But Cornell’s own report shows that Arts & Sciences is the most difficult in terms of gaining admission into the colleges that include CAS & Engineering. From the postings here on the collegeconfidential website, it seems that Cornell’s Arts & Sciences college gets cross apps with the other ivys as they are (like Cornell CAS) essentially liberal arts colleges, with only a few offering other programs. From what the links to cornell show and what I read here on college confidential, Cornell’s CAS is extremely difficult in terms of freshman admission, and even more difficult for transfer admission. Hope this helps.

I think your math may be incorrect as AAP has the lowest acceptance rates, That being said none are easy and fit is supposed to be extremely important. Good luck to all CAS CALS or where ever you applied.

no big deal, I was only talking about CAS, Engineering and Agriculture colleges, which colleges are mentioned in my post. I see the Architecture # you mention, but it is a vey small amount of people looking at that program in the first place. For sure, none are easy. Good luck to all.

Every one of the Ivy league colleges has “engineering” to one degree or another, Cornell’s engineering college clearly gets cross-applicants with these schools.

As for which is harder to get into, for you, that depends completely on your particular capability set and “resume”, and how these match up with what each school is looking for. It does appear though that COE will be easier for you if you are female and match up well.
