college of communication help!

Hi, I'm looking into the advertising program in the college of communication. I was just curious about how this college is. Is it really easy to get into, is it easy when you are taking the courses(too easy?)? I really love UT, but I don't want to go to a program that is pretty much a blow off. Please help:)

Hi Austinlady,
The College of Communication is the third hardest to get into after Business and Engineering. It is very well regarded and would not be considered a blow off…it is also one of the majors that you cannot just transfer into… you must apply.

alright thanks. If I give you my stats can you tell me if im that range?
Im top 6% out of 520 in my class
3.6 UW GPA
SAT: 610 CR, 570 math, 620 writing(but on separate test- going to retake it in october)
I’ve taken 4 APs already and will take 5 my senior year
golf for three years and went to state each year
NHS

I am definitely not an expert on “chancing”, but from my own D’s experience, I would say that you would be safe in putting Communications as your first choice major! You have good stats and rank. Are you in state?

Top 6% definitely helps you, assuming you are instate?

ya im in instate. i dont think i would be able to go to UT if I was out of state lol. Oh and I am also going to have good letters of recommendations and essay if they look at that. I know that McCombs school usually only admits the top 2.5%, but since they have marketing I was thinking of putting that as my first choice major, just in case there is a slight possibility…, and put advertising as my second. Im not sure if this is the best idea, but those are the only two programs I want to be in.

Well that depends really if you prefer marketing or advertising, they are pretty different things. And McCombs admits beyond 2.5% for sure, even some non top 10%'s get in (although few), the 2% cutoff is really like the “guaranteed admit” point (although that’s not exactly true either.)

I just got accepted in my major as Advertising. With your stats, you shouldn’t have a problem getting into the Comm school. Just be sure that when you take ADV 318J you take it completely seriously and devote your life to it… including some weekends. You must make a B or better in the class in order to continue on to the major.

Good luck!! :)

Austinlady,

I was just reading over your stats and thought I’d let you know that UT-Austin doesn’t superscore to find the best combined scores for your SAT. You’re better off sending them all of your SAT scores, even those you’re not proud of, and they will put them into an equation and use the one that best works for your chances.

@why two kay- im more of a business person then a creative one, so marketing will be better, but im really interested in advertising lol, so whichever i get into will be amazing:)

@msolo45- alright i will!thanks! and good luck:) hopefully i will get in in 2011!

@hookemhorns0- im already sending in all my scores, and my last math score bombed haha(that’s why I didn’t put it in my stats-i really don’t know what happened)

Yes, but what I’m saying is they will use the overall score from one SAT sitting, basically. They won’t pick your best math score, your best writing score, and your best CR score. They will just pick whichever overall score helps you the best.

So that “bombed math score” may end up being the one they use and it all works out. :P

ok i got it thanks hookemhorns0. and i have another question for anyone who is willing to answer. I am thinking about the business foundation program too, since I really want to go into business. Is this better then the bridging disciplines program?

Hmm… I’m doing the program too. Pretty much anyone doing advertising is encouraged to get certified because it’s about 3 classes or something like that more than you have to take anyway to get certified so it’s worth it. It basically let’s employers know that you have a business background from the best university in Texas :)

^ This is a short thread but it does talk about the BDP vs BFP

thank you:) i will take everything all of you said into consideration and thanks for the link vacheespagnole!

its been a while since anyone has posted on this but i have one more question. its not crucial for my application, which i am about to submit, but i want to know if i can take the texas media/interactive path in the advertising program and also the business foundations program.
Will that be too confusing to take all of those courses, study abroad programs, internships etc.?
