College of Earth and Mineral Sciences

I understand that PSU - EMS is the lowest college in terms of enrollment at PSU, but can anyone inform me of why that is? Is it because its really hard to get into, or just not as popular as all of the others?

No one has any info on the EMS college??

I saw your question, just not sure of the answer. My D is starting this fall as a Geoscience major. Unlike other degree programs in some other PSU colleges, there were no special requirements for any of the EMS majors that I saw. I would think it’s just small because earth/physical science majors are just not as popular as biology or business. The size of the EMS college was a plus for my D since Penn State is such a large school. At our visit we told there were, if I heard correctly, 270 undergrads. We also looked at UDel and JMU and their “earth” colleges were fairly small, too.

Alright, that pretty much answers my question. I was worried that because of its low enrollment it was just as hard to get into as something like engineering or business.

Also - many universities do not have separate earth/geoscience colleges. Many are part of general Science colleges, so the “college” enrollment numbers include BIO, CHEM, PHYS, etc majors.

Etuck24 - If you can, you should do TOTEMS. It really sounds like a great time and a good way to meet other freshmen in EMS. We were told info would be coming out in May and/or it would be discussed at FTCAP advising day. From what I’ve read and heard, students move in about 3 days prior to other freshmen and travel to Raystown Lake. You spend 3 days in cabins having fun. You can look it up on the EMS website or google it.

That does look like fun, but I’m only a high school junior, and thats for first year college students

Sorry, I thought you were a senior and had applied. If you apply, definitely do it as early as possible. It’s nice to have an answer (hopefully positive) early in the admissions game.

I intend on applying September 1st ;)

Good luck. get your resume together and give it to your teacher(s) to work on over the summer. That way you’re only waiting on your guidance counselor when you go back to school.
