College of Engineering Choices... help!

<p>My son has been accepted to the colleges of engineering at both University of Michigan and Michigan State University (Honors College). We are completely aware of the very good reputation that U of M has with regard to its engineering program, and we like the school. Here is our issue: my son has a very good shot at receiving a full ride (tuition, room/board, books, fees, plus $1000 spending $ for 4 years) from MSU. We have visited both campuses multiple times, and our son just feels more at home at MSU (although he lived at U of M last summer for 10 days). </p>

<p>So here's the issue: how important is program presige? We talked with an engineering professional yesterday, and he believes that the tide is changing. He said that a few years ago they only wanted to interview graduated from top programs. Now, however, he said that it is important to excel, no matter where you get your degree. Setting yourself apart from the crowd is more of a factor than the school listed on your diploma, and they are looking at more and more candidates that do not come from the top ranked programs.</p>

<p>Any thoughts on this? We appreciate any help out there!</p>

<p>I don’t know if the times have changed but at one time MSU had one of the biggest (or biggest) placement services in the nation. Michigan may get more of the elite companies to visit the campus but any good employer in the Midwest is coming to State to recruit. For what it is worth, my first job out of MSU was with Westinghouse (based in Pittsburgh, PA) back when it was a huge company. They came to MSU to recruit.</p>
