I’m an international student so I’ll be paying the OOS tuition, and according to pretty much every other source (including their own website), the OOS tuition is around $50K. But there’s this page on their website that states College of Engineering tuition for a full-time student (for both semesters) as less than $30K/year (https://ro.umich.edu/tuition-residency/tuition-fees?academic_year=40&college_school=22&full_half_term=35&level_of_study=37).
Can someone please clarify this? What do the numbers on this page mean?
Those numbers (under $30k) are for an OOS full-time (12-18 hours) student for ONE full term. Fall and Winter are each one full term, so your annual tuition is 2x. FYI, Fall (Aug-Dec) and Winter (Jan-April) are the two main terms at Michigan. Spring and Summer, which many fewer students attend, are half terms that run May-Aug.
@MomOf2TeenGirls But $27,688 x 2 = $55,376, which is different from the listed $49,350 per year.
The $27,688 tuition is for students that have enough credits to be considered a Junior or Senior. Freshman and Sophomore tuition is $24,656. Note that this goes by credits earned, so it can happen before you complete 2 years worth of studying if you are bringing in AP credits. I believe the cutoff is 55 or more credits to be considered a Junior status so you pay the higher rate.
Yes… My son is a second year, second semester junior and tuition now goes up $6,000 approx for the year… Not sure if we should be happy or sad…
LOL…
My son actually had to drop his AP credits for Stats or he would have been Junior status for his second semester of FRESHMAN year. Ugh. His advisor was actually aware of that situation already so when he went in with the intent of dropping the credits he didn’t even get a chance, they suggested it right off the bat.
That’s crazy… He will be done then like next year… Lol… We want our son to be there all 4 years even if that means doing another internship or co-op etc.
Unfortunately the way pre-reqs line up that would be impossible! If all goes well 3 years is possible but I wouldn’t hold my breath over it - even with as much as I would like to not have to pay the year of OOS tuition. I like the internship/co-op ideas as well. We’ll just see what next year brings, we were planning for 4 full years as well.
@ckd022. Michigan has so many opportunities for the kids to keep busy. There are also study abroad engineering internships /classes etc. My son is looking at one in France if the internship thing doesn’t work out for him this summer. Good luck with your son.
