College of Engineering

Is it really hard to get into the College of Engineering at UP? I got in last week and asked around school; everyone was really amazed. Is it harder to get into engineering than the other majors?

Your “admission” is not the same thing as entrance to major, which will make you officially an engineering major. That happens sophomore year. In the meantime, the college of engineering will do everything in its power to weed out people who aren’t serious studiers, great at math, make gpa requirements, etc… Yes, it’s hard to get into engineering, but a good sign that you were accepted into the college. Keep working!

So as long as you do what you’re supposed to do freshman year, you’ll become an engineering major sophomore year…ok sounds like a plan

If you are accepted into the COE you are considered in pre-major status. In the spring of your sophomore year you will identify your preferred major. To be accepted into your major you need to meet minimum GPA requirements and also have taken the required courses. Some departments (architectural, aerospace, bioengineering, chemical engineering, civil, industrial, and mechanical) have enrollment caps and will only take a specified number of students (though they guarantee enrollment to eligible students who maintain a specific GPA, usually 3.0). You will not actually be enrolled in a specific program until your junior year.

yeah, i’ve heard its really hard–but its even harder to stay in.
congrats! :]

What are you options if you are not admitted to a major of your choice? I assume you would need to select a major w/o enrollment caps? How difficult would it be to change colleges (w/in PSU)? Say one wanted to major in Civil Engineering, but had a GPA of 2.80 and was not admitted to the CE major. How hard would it be to transfer to Smeal and switch into a business major such as Accounting?

You may be able to switch to another major, but not accounting. Smeal has a similar process for entrance to major as the Engineering college. You must take about 8 or 9 entrance to major courses in freshman and sophomore and maintain a certain gpa to get into certain majors that are controlled. If you haven’t taken all those prerequisite courses, you can’t switch to the business college. There are other majors you could switch to, though.

So when i apply should i select my major or go into DUS to get the best chance of being accepted or does it not matter?

You get to list your top 3 choices (I think), and if you lack a high enough GPA for ANY of them they bring you in and offer you whatever they can. If at that point you choose to leave engineering you can, but I do not know the procedures.

If you are interested in engineering, apply to engineering not DUS - it is possible to get admitted to a major from DUS but I think getting into the controlled majors is much much harder.
