I was accepted to UMass Amherst through early action, but I did not get into the college of engineering as a Chem Engineering major. However, I got into their college of natural sciences exploratory track. I contacted the advisor for the college of engineering and they told me that I can still graduate as a Chemical Engineering major as long as I come to the Student Orientation to get things set up between me and my advisor. She told me that once I tell my advisor my intended major, I’ll need to take the required classes for my first semester included intro to engineering. However, the problem is, I am put on a waiting list for the Pre-Engineering class which means I have to be lucky that there will be a spot available for my first semester. It was confusing for the most part, but I understood the idea of it later on. Is it really hard to get a spot for the intro engineering course as a major for chem engineering? I don’t know if it will extend my time at UMass if I don’t into the class that I wanted.
Even if you can’t get in from the get-go, there will be spots after freshman year due to attrition. Just be sure you’re taking the physics, chem, and calc courses so that you won’t be behind.
S had a friend who started freshman year as a bio major, changed to chem engineering spring semester of freshman year, and he will graduate on time.
