My S has a recent idea that he may want to major in Forestry. There are not many colleges with that specific degree. This is one that came up that looks interesting, if he does decide to go that route. We are in CA so I just don't know anything about it.

It’s a SUNY- located in Syracuse and students can crossregister at Syracuse University. It does not have the breadth of the larger SUNY’s but supposed to be very good. The problem with it is if your S decides he wants to change majors once he is there, the offerings are pretty limited for non-science forestry/environment. Also, the weather could really be an adjustment. I moved here from Calif- into the mid-Hudson region- but we get a LOT less snow than Syracuse. He has to be sure he can handle the winters- snow, ice and many cold gray days. It is not known as a party campus.

I don’t know anything about that particular school, but quite a few land-grant public universities in the midwest and western states have forestry majors. Generally Forestry is located in the College of Agriculture or something similar. Just as an example, at the University of MO, Columbia (the flagship campus of the U of MO), forestry is one of the majors in the College of Food, Natural Resources and Agriculture–CAFNR.

Start looking at the web sites of some universities that were established as land grant institutions and you will find some Forestry majors.

If you are in California, why not Humboldt? [Department of Forestry & Wildland Resources—Humboldt State University](Forestry, Fire, & Rangeland Management)

Cal Poly SLO also offers a B.S. in Forestry & Natural Resources: [Forestry & Natural Resources - NRM - Cal Poly](http://www.nrm.calpoly.edu/fnr/index.ldml)

In California, you can look up [UC Berkeley](Ecosystem Management and Forestry | UC Berkeley Rausser College of Natural Resources), [UC Davis](Majors), [Cal Poly San Luis Obispo](http://www.nrm.calpoly.edu/fnr/index.ldml), [CSU Channel Islands](http://esrm.csuci.edu/), and [Humboldt State](Forestry, Fire, & Rangeland Management).

For UC and CSU schools, you can use the [major lookup page at assist.org](<a href=“Welcome to ASSIST”>Welcome to ASSIST) to see what schools have the desired major (select Environmental Studies and Sciences, then select Forestry on the next page to see Forestry majors at UC and CSU schools – or just type Forestry in the search box). assist.org is mainly to help community college students match up community college courses with UC and CSU courses for transfer purposes, but it can be used for other purposes like this.

S went to Humboldt (not for forestry but he had several friends who were) and they all now have forestry jobs. Don’t let other’s perception of the school throw you off. For the right kid there are lots of opportunities.

Cal-Poly’s program looks REALLY good! Most of my family are Cal poly alum, but my S has so far shown no interest in applying to CA colleges… :-((( Maybe this program would change his mind… Does anyone know if you can also do pre-med at Cal-Poly?

You can do pre-med at any university in any major, as long as the pre-med courses are available (chemistry, organic chemistry, biology, physics).

Here is [Cal Poly’s information for pre-meds](http://www.healthprofessions.calpoly.edu/career.html).

If he wants to go to school in a different part of the country…
NC State University…[Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources](http://www.cnr.ncsu.edu/fer/)

This document lists all of the college forestry programs accredited through the Society of American Foresters.

I just know it’s a really small school that shares facilities with Syracuse University. (I believe they’re finally building their own dorm now)
My brother plans on transferring there after 2 years at a SUNY cc. (It’s guarenteed if he meets the cutoffs)

They are building their own dorms to open in Fall.
They are somewhat selective.
I applied (out of state) with Early Action with 3.4-3.5 weighted GPA and 30 ACT.
They wanted my mid-year grades.
My 1st semester GPA senior year was about 4.3.
I was still waitlisted.
They are also pretty bad at answering emails.
