College of Letters and Science

Anyone know the name of the classes you must take at CAL to be accepted into the economics major? Thanks in advance ! :)

even though i got reject by cal and la, i “believe” there is a website called assist…?

Hey, I am not sure but I did get accepted to the College of Letters and Science for political science. That probably doesn’t help you… sorry.

Statistics 20, 21, 25 or any upper division statistics course
Intermediate Economic Theory (one course required to apply)
Economics 100A or 101A (or equivalent)
Economics 100B or 101B (or equivalent)

im a bit confused. so our first semester we need to take those courses listed above by transferuc, and then we can get into the economics major? so we have to like “waste” a semester?

I’m a bit confused too. Are you already in? If you are, talk to an academic advisor. If you’re trying to transfer, check out assist.com.

its not a waste. you have to take those classes to graduate with an econ degree. a waste of a semester would be making you retake a course you’ve already earned credit for. Also, you need to earn at least a 3.0 in your first semester. 300 transfer admits apply for the econ major and 200 get in every fall. I personally took stat 134 and Econ 101A instead of the normal stat 2x/econ100x series.

Jet can you tell us the different between the 100A,100B,101A and 101B econ courses?

101A/101B require ALOT more math. Fluency with Multivariable calculus/Linear algebra is an absolute necessity. Econ 101A is the application of multivariable calculus to microeconomics and game theory.

take a look at the first couple lecture slides to get an idea of whether or not you’re prepared mathematically:http://www.econ.berkeley.edu/users/webfac/dellavigna/e101a_f09/e101a.shtml

Ah Thank you Jet I will be taking 100A/100B then.

Hey does anyone know if we can immediately appeal for a different major before we’ve taken a single class? I was admitted to one major, but I would prefer to major in something within the same college, and with the same pre-req’s. Is it difficult at Berkeley to immediately petition for a change of major?

@ vintij: You’re switching out of the best English program in the country?? I’ll swap ya philosophy for your English lol.

lol. I love philosophy though, well classical philosophy, haven’t read up on modern too much. Anyway, I just want to know if it’s possible is all. I’m going to minor in Rhetoric, providing I even go to Berkeley, but I just want to know that it is possible to switch majors immediately, in case I take the plunge on the new Rhetoric major. I have a feeling it’s going to be useful in my future line of work (law school)

You and I have similar academic interests and goals. I’m a former English major, and I was admitted to UCB for philosophy. I never really departed from my roots and love for English. haha oh well.

You can switch into a non-impacted major right away at CALSO. I’m positive about this. You have the prereqs done, correct?

“you need to earn at least a 3.0 in your first semester. 300 transfer admits apply for the econ major and 200 get in every fall.”
Does that mean if one has earned 3.0 gpa and completeD all these courses will be admitted by the economics for sure?
