Hello everyone! I’m a rising senior and currently looking at a few more colleges to expand my list.
I’m not from massachusetts, I’m actually from the west coast but I fell in love with Boston and most cities within the vicinity of it. I loved Boston College, really liked BU and NU. Sadly I didn’t tour COTHC but I was wondering if any people who attend or are attending there could give me any reviews on the college? I don’t know too much about it, I’m trying to research it more.
How is the campus/social life. I’m not a sports player but I do love attending sports events.
Drinking/party scene? I’m not into that either, I’m okay with an occasional party and hanging with friends on the weekend but getting drunk and hooking up is not my thing.
Academics? I’ll be a biochem major.
And the city in general? I don’t know a whole lot about Worcester so it is a safe city? Is it college oriented like Boston is? Just in general how do you like it.
Thank you!
Can you afford out of state schools?
Whether or not I can afford the tuition is not what I am asking
Bump
I graduated from Holy Cross in '92. I can tell you what it was like then, though I’m sure it has evolved. HC is like a smaller, liberal arts version of Boston College, with a more intimate, community feel to it and a bit more focus on academics. Sports are big, but not overwhelming. The administration is also a making a big push in the arts. In general, I found it to be a balanced and supportive environment with a focus on cultivating the “whole person”. There certainly was plenty of drinking in my day, but I think that may have changed a bit as well. I know there is a substance free dorm, and there is a strong emphasis on providing plenty of activities to keep people busy. Worcester is not Boston, or Chestnut Hill, but it has its charms. It’s a post-industrial city and still working to find its niche in the 21st century. But it is very central to everything New England has to offer - Boston, the Cape, the Berkshires, skiing in NH and VT, and certainly better than being out in the boonies, in my opinion. Here’s a great article from the New York Times on the strides that Worcester has been making lately: http://www.nytimes.com/2015/01/07/realestate/commercial/long-a-college-town-worcester-now-looks-the-part.html?_r=0
I greatly enjoyed my time at HC and strongly recommend it to others. Hope this helps!
@NASA2014 OOS privates generally cost about the same as in state privates of the same tier, unless you’re referring to the price of travel/plane tickets, which in the grand scheme of things, cost relatively little compared to the overall cost of a school. When people ask if CC kids can afford OOS schools, they usually mean OOS PUBLIC schools, where OOS kids will have a tuition surcharge and virtually no chance at need-based and usually merit-based financial aid, which is reserved for instate students, because public universities are funded by state taxes.
Thank you!
